Hi, I am a new comer to the land rover world. I have a 2003(Sept) Td4, I have successfully changed the air filter, oil filter with oil change but cannot find the fuel filter. The one Paddock sent me is a screw on canister type. I had a look under the rear wheel arch but I think that is only the pump, couldn't see anything that looked like the filter I was sent.
Have I missed something or been sent the wrong filter? I would be very grateful for any help.

Hi Jerry,
The fuel filter is located below the electrics box, half way between the battery and the bulkhead on the passenger side, under the bonnet. It is very difficult to see how it all fits, but it has a central screw which holds the plastic filter housing/mounting in place. Find this screw (which is a small self tapper) and be prepared to loose it, or use a magnetic screw driver. Then lift the plastic housing up and away, (towards the engine) be ready with loads of rags to catch the diesel fuel when you disconnect the pipes. There is an earth wire attached to the housing also. (anti interference, I think) It is quite a fiddle getting it back again, as it has two locating lugs on the back of the plastic housing/mounting.

Hi Jerry and Martin,

I have a MY01 Td4 myself and since last year I have a fuelfilter in my garage as well, I know the location of it but after I saw the set-up I got scared to start changing it, so it's still in the garage

. What I wanted to ask is, IF I get to it to change it and I manage to do so, how gets the filter filled with fuel as I can't see a device to pump up the fuel? Or is it just by cranking the engine ? If eys, how long could it take ?
(My question because I understand it is not the best of situation for a diesel engine to run dry ??)

hi willow it can be done just by cranking it but it takes a while and it doesnt like it. there should be a manual pump on it that looks like a piece of bulging rubber usually at the top of it. good luck!

Hello Will, I think my filter is a different type to yours, this is why I had a bit of trouble.I have the correct one being sent to me, so all should be ok now.

HI Willo,
Yes! Thats the one that sits under the electrics box, (between the battery and the bulkhead) remember to find the little screw on the plastic filter holder and unscrew it first. (it is in the middle of the plastic housing and it is easily lost) Then lift and remove the whole lot to one side and disconnect the fuel lines. A workshop manual will help you a lot.

Thanks for your reply, at least now I can be sure it's the correct one. As in the meantime I found out this should be replaced after 5 years I think I will have to grab my courage together and start going at it one day or another. Thanks again and take care.

Hi Will and Martin, the filter in Wills photo is of the one I was sent first,which for my September 2003 Td4 Serengeti 5dr was the wrong one. The one for my version fits under the rear wheel arch, alongside the fuel pump and sedimentor. Paddocks have now sent the correct one which I am in the process of changing.

Will I've sent an attatchment which is from a land rover workshop manual, it shows how to do yours.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks a lot for the attachment. Hope to be successful when I decide to change the filter. It looks, by reading the attachment, not TOO difficult but as it will be the first time I exchange such a filter I'm a little anxious as I know diesels don't like airleaks in their system. But it loooks as it is the normal way to exchange a filter (oil or fuel) and oilfilters I've changed a lot already, in the past I changed my oil- and airfilters, the sparkplugs and the contacts every 10.000 km, starting with my Mini in the '60's (86.000 km), followed by a Renault R4 (35.000 km), an Opel Manta A (186.000 km), a Peugeot 309 XRD (72.000 km), Mercedes 190E (201.000 km) to end up with the Hippo now, all the previous cars were petrol except for the Peugeot, there I did change once the fuelfilter but that was a piece of cake, was in the enginecompartment and it had a pump on it to pump up the fuel. Here no such device I've seen but in previous posts it was mentioned to crank it up and since I had to put a new battery in the car yesterday (after almost 5 years) I guess the load will be allright if I decide to change the filter in a couple of weeks/months.

I have just changed my filter and its not too bad a job really its a bit fiddly on the pipes getting them off. The filter will be jammed in the plastic housing so I found the best course of action is to remove the whole housing fuel pump an all and get a large hole punch and drive the filter out of the casing. Then once ya done that put it all back and crank the car over and after the 5/6 turn she will fire up no problem.

Jerry, I have been searching for my fuel filter on my TD4 march 2003 and could not find it either. Now after reading your posts i will look under rear wheel arch... Is that on the right side? Michael

Hi Michael, yes it's on the drivers side rear, you will see two 10mm bolts undo them and with a bit of fiddling the unit will come out. Be prepared for a bit of a job to get the old filter out of it's housing, I found that if you cut a hole in the end of the black plastic, you can easily get a drift or piece of wood in to help tap it out. It holds quite a bit of diesel so have plenty of rags handy. Good luck it's well worth doing.

Jerry, thanks for the information, I crawled under today and found it. When I finaly got it down enough to see what was there I saw two black tubes with the rubber pipes on them. My question is are both of those things the filter?
I will not change filters soon but I just like to know and be ready when the time comes. Oh yeah I have a left hand drive model. Have not had it in the snow yet but I hope to soon. Just haul horses and fish with it now. Michael

Jerry, or somebody, just one more thing. Under the black plastic housing there is a grey knob or plug. Is hat some kind of drain like on some other types of fuel filters? I mean can I open it to clean? Michael

Hi again Michael, one of the black tubes has the filter inside it and the other has the fuel pump. The one for the pump has electrical connections on one end, the filter has only in and out pipes. The other bit you saw is the sedimentor you can drain this but you will need a new sealing washer. I'm sorry I didn't realise you were left hand drive.

I am having the same problems with changing a fuel filter on my 2001 TD4 GS. I can see the filter ok but not the small screw all speak of. What is the exact position of this screw ? Also is it pos to email me the attachment that you kindly forwarded to Will and Martin.
