Hi,

I recently bought a P38 4 litre petrol and even though I knew it would cost a fair bit to run, I would have thought I would get more than 5-6mpg out of it.There must be something wrong, because many people on this forum expect around 18mpg.

I am hoping that someone will be able to suggest what could be wrong with it?

It may also help to know that sometimes when I park my car after work and it has, for example, 1/4 of a tank of petrol left, when I start it in the morning, that is now down to below 1/8 of a tank??

Any suggestions would be great

have you had a look to see if you have a fuel leak? is it miss firing when its running do you have smell of petrol? and welcome

Sounds like the petrol tank/pipes/filters/something-else-in-the-fuel-system has a hole in it and is leaking.

I'd start by manually feeling and tightening all the petrol pipe/filter connections, injectors etc etc. Then go for a run to get the engine hot, half full at least, maybe full tank of petrol, park up and put a large piece of cardboard underneath it so you can see any drips. If you can't see any, a bag of cement spread about should show them up. Then trace it back to the area that's leaking.

Could also have a friend rev the engine, bonnet up, while you watch for any leaks/misty spray/loose connections ... be careful!

Or go for a drive through a local ford/muddy/sandy area so the bottom is coated in gloop, and use that to pin-point the leaks .. 'swotIdo ... ;)

Try getting down by the front of the drivers side rear wheel and see if you can smell petrol. The usual place for a leak is the pipes on top of the fuel sender/pump wich is on the top of the tank, so you wont see any petrol landing on the floor as it stays on the top of the tank and evaporates. If this is the problem the tank will need to come out and a new sender and possibly new pipes up to the filter.
