Hi,

A grinding noise has developed in the front axle of my defender. I can feel the vibration coming up the propshaft, but it only happens when turning left, low revs and at a speed of around 30-40mph. This leads me to think it could be a cv joint? But really don't know, does anyone have an idea of what it could be?

Thanks

As it is only when you turn very likely a CV. Get someone to walk alongside and listen, may help pinpoint the problem. Wheel bearing may be another culprit.

As above, I'd say CV. But when mine was on the way out it made for a loud click, then vibration.

Thanks for the help,
I’ve just changed the cv on the off side wheel which is what I suspected was the issue and the noise is STILL there. Could it be something to do with the diff? I’m even more confused about what it could be.

Something else I forgot to mention, I replaced my front prop shaft with a gywn Lewis one a while back because the ujs were buggered, after I changed it, the noise went completely. It then came back around a month later.

No worries,
Not particularly, I change the diff oil every 12/18 months.
The off side swivel was changed and runs the lifetime grease but the other still runs ep 80/90. Haven’t checked those since I changed the swivel which was about a couple off years ago. I always thought that if your turning left then the dodgy cv joint would be on the right and vice versa. Is this correct? Or have I just changed the wrong cv joint

Normally cv clicks
Bearings rumble.
Uj chirp
Take the drive member ends off you will see what your grease is like.

Good luck

Cheers for the advise, I'll check the other cv joint tonight. Driving into work the noise/ vibration happened whilst the wheels were straight, so I think I could just be a vibration when taking up power when down low in the rev range.
