hi all,
myself and the missus are looking at a series 2a. have had friends with landies over the years, but never owned one. well thats about to change and any info on the series 2a would be greatly appreciated.

its a 1968 model and the underneath looks very sound. its got the 2.25 petrol. comes with hard top and (brand new) canvas top with sticks.

whats it worth?

Welcome Weave, couldn't say what its worth chap. Bad Points to look for are
Bulkhead, footwells, rear cross member, round the bump stops etc. The list is endless chap after all its nearly 40 years old. I'd be sceptical because of the brand new canvas and sticks. People don't spend money too sell something. I could be wrong, it may be a genuine bargain. Has the current owner got bills and receipts for parts/work etc?

cheers fellas - the canvas top is for a series one that the guy is building.

they have owned this particilar landy for 20 years and it is pukka underneath. i have gone with a friend who has had a few landies and we gave it another thorough going over.

the chassis really is amazingly sound.

bad points are the wiring, which whilst all of it works is somewhat "home made".

i offered him 1200 quid without the canvas and sticks, plus he is going to throw in a spare series 2a box as there is a whine sometimes at idle.

its got the 2a engine and runs a series 3 box.

the 4wd system works fine and there is little wander around straight ahead. the swivels in the front hubs look pretty good, not much oiliness round that area, although one of the gaiters could do with renewing.

it has the potential to be a very tidy motor, with a lick of paint.

he said 1800 for the lot, so i reckon if i can get it for 1600 all in, i will be doing ok.

will let you guys know how i get on.

Thats ok chap,good luck and knock the price down as much as you can cos believe me you will have a hole in yer pocket once you've got a Landy.

i have a mk1 rs2000 ford escort rally car!

i have had highly modified jap rockets too - subaru impreza and mitsubishi evo 5 - they are pretty good at draining cash also!

the thing with this landy is that where it is so clean underneath and the fact that its the right sort of age of vehicle we are after, we are inclined to part with a little more than maybe we should.

if we miss out on this one, i am certain we will trail all over the gaff looking at rotters and wish we had parted with a tad more to get this current potential sale.

This is very true chap, on the occasions I have been "Between Rovers" and looking to buy I've trawled through some real crap. The one I have now (1959 series 2 88") I bought on the basis that it's solid and I can work around that. You are quite right, I felt the same when my current Landy was up for sale. I pushed my luck with the bartering but not enough to lose out. In the end I couldn't think of a reason "not to buy".

i think the guy knows this and will be keen to hold out for a decent price. the scarcity of truly solid chassis's are what will command the premium at the end of the day. tbh i cant think of a reason other than pride that is stopping me shelling out the extra couple of hundred quid for the motor.

Yeah thats all it is !!!!!!!!!!. The next one you find may cost yer more than that £200 to get it owt like the one you've just missed. Sods law.
