Hi all,
Long story short, my TD4 diesel has been parked up at a friends camp site which is surrounded by farm land which apparently has a health rat population.

One (or more) has crept under the bonnet and chewed through what looks like the main wiring loom just as it comes out of the bulk head on the drivers side.
Now the dash board lights up but nothing in the dash pod works. Temp gauge say's it's at maximum from the moment you insert the key, fuel gauge just points in a random direction every time I start the car.
I have no rev counter, no speedo. only thing which works is the indicator lights.
HDC, TC, ABS, oill light, hand brake light and probably some others i've forgotten about are all constantly lit up.

Now the questions....
Because the damage has been done so close to the bulkhead it's a not going to be practical to gain access to the damaged wires from the engine bay.
I think my only fix is going to be to strip out parts of the dash, continuity test the damaged sections of wire to identify them from inside the car and then pull in new sections where required and solder them to the un damaged sections of wire in the engine bay.

Does anyone have any idea where inside the car these wires are likely to terminate?
Should I be looking at the fuseboard?
Does anyone have any advice regarding anything that might be wired in between the dash or fuseboard and the damaged areas just outside the bulkhead? A continuity test will tell me I have the right circuit but won't tell me if anything else is involved. I don't want to start pulling wires and inadvertently miss something important out of the circuit.

How difficult is it to strip out the dash pod? by that I mean the actual pod which holds the speedo etc. Would I need to remove the steering wheel? The steering column is one of the adjustable ones.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Paul.

I feel your pain. I've had 2 vehicle's wiring and trim chewed this year :(
Sounds like yours is going to be harder to repair than mine was. Good luck with the repair.

Thanks for that. It's a massive pain but it needs to be done. It's not going to pass the next MOT without a working dash.
I'm never going to take it near a camp site ever again.....

Would it not be easier to remove that loom and replace with one from a breakers?

I'm not familiar with that loom - but you'll be able to unplug everything it connects to and just plug the replacement in. It might be a pain if it goes on long routes under trim/carpets - eg to the ABS ECU. Might be worth having a look in a Rave doc to see if it will identify which components/other looms it connects to and where. Rave is good - it has pictures of all (lots of?) connectors showing you where they are and what they look like. I presume it will also enable you to identify exactly where all the end points on that particular loom are.

Thank you.
Where will I find the Rave doc?
I'm new here and quite new to land rovers.

There is a thread showing Rave download locations....

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/rave-disk-maintenance-manual.260227/

However, I believe most/all those links are no longer working! I think the one you need is rave01.iso. I've put this on my website as rave2000 and you can get it from...

http://www.mydocz.com/Landie/Rave2000.iso

There's notes on that first link on how to open iso files. I simply open it with "Virtual CloneDrive" which mounts it as a new drive (eg E:) and then run the rave.exe program.

Be a bit careful - that Rave is for TD4 from the start (ie year 2000) - I would presume things changed over model years.

Thanks again, I'll check it out now :)

It's a big job to replace the main harness as its a total interior out job

On a recent rodent attacked Freelander I repaired with the damage in a similar area to yours (through the bulkhead) remove the dash which gives you access to the area better and repair as you go then build back up the car

Many thanks
How much of the dash needs to come out? are we talking the full section across the top or would I get away with removing one section in particular to get access to the wires??
If I need to take the steering wheel off will the Air bag be a problem?

Dash removed isn't difficult but quite labour intensive. There are lots of hidden fixings but it is doable at home. The airbags are pretty safe provided you disconnect the battery for 20 minutes before starting with the strip down.

with regards to the airbag , disconnect the battery and leave it for 30 mins, then remove the airbag, DONT ever, put a multimeter onto the airbag as it can cause the airbag to inflate , store the airbag somewhere dry and out of the way

with regards to the dashboard , I replaced mine and is very labour intensive, the wiring loom is in sections , plugs are down the side of the interior front side panels, u may be lucky

depends on where the loom has been chewed and if u can get to it , if not the entire dash has to come out

if u do have to take it out , take plenty of pics. get some storage jars, put some labels on the jars and write on where all the screws, clips etc come from

hope that helps abit
