what do people think on here is the freelander better than the discovery td5 in the snow/ice have had both and never had problems getting anywhere but i can remember the discovery seemed to slide more when braking/slowingdown what are your thoughts :)

Get the TD5, its much better, especially when it comes to reliablilty. The F/L might be more manuverable in the snow for you but the snow won't be here for much longer (or so they reckon).

As for the disco not stopping as well as the F/L in snow, remember how much more the disco weighs

I think Gassy's post says it all. The Freelander is lighter, more manoeverable, better performance/economy/handling etc.

The two TD5 Discos I drove at work in the snow were ok but missed the difflock - these models didn't seem to have them, which for a vehicle with the transfer box like the Disco seems like a silly thing to leave out.

The Freelander is also great in the snow, especially with its more nimble handling.

I previously had a TD5 and now have a Freelander TD4 - both are good in snow - I couldn't really say if one was better than the other in that respect - either would serve you well:)

Otherwise, the Freelander is light with good handling and a bit nippier than the Disco but the Disco is still good with that very solid feel and more space - it will be better for all year round off roading (if that is what you do) and I understand that the diff lock is easy to retrofit on some models. Fuel consumption wise doing local running, you will be lucky to see 30mpg on a TD5 where as the Freelander TD4 I get a minimum of 35mpg. But with the TD5 it has that brilliant sound of the 5 cylinder engine.

Given the choice of a well specced TD5 or a TD4 and only doing low miles I think I would go with the Disco but to be honest I would be happy with either.
