Hi

I am looking for help on a transmission problem on a 1999 1,8 Freelander with 48,000 miles on the clock.

I have two faults that may not be connected:

1) The rear drivers side tyre has worn on just the car side. Centre tread ok bur car side down to canvas.

2) There is a transmission noise that is most noticeable (!) in reverse on lock - load bangs under the gearbox. Clearly something major wrong. Drives ok forwards & reverse (no lock) but there can be a jerk on power take up but nothing like the result in reverse with lock.


Main thought is the IRD - If so, any suggestions on where a replacement could be sourced from?

First thing to look at, check the rear dif mounts..common fault with symptoms yer saying. Pop a search in for transmission noise/reversing, and get the whisky bottle ready...:eek:

mite be worth taking the rear prop orf and see of that eliminates the noise.

or lift all four wheels clear [un safe] and drive in gears un listen underneath , will be a quiter clunk wif no load, but might elp ta pin it. . . .:)

Or just put a loaded 12 bore in your mouth and pull the trigger... it'll be a more pleasant way to die! ;)
 
Anyone there!
I've mojor thumping noises coming from the below the front of car. Started when I was in reverse and noticed the deep thud sound. Two days after, after driving to work it became more noticeable in all gears. Was very alarmed and had a tow home.
Had a mechanic look and said it might be the prop or transmission. He's saying to check oil, if there's metal in oil, it's transmission. if not, it's prop. Any ideas people.
Another mechanic, no. 2 said it was the transmission. Looks nasty for a price to fix. 500-top £700. Any ideas of keeping costs low and fixing this thing. Can I do it myself?
I changed the thermo housing, front brake pads, rear exhaust and main outlet hose.
Seem to love getting my hands dirty so whats the advise or procedure?
Help!!!
 
Sounds like the IRD pinion is on the way out. We need lots of information as the Freelander transmission is a complex bit of kit. What mileage is on it? Has it had a new VCU? Oh and introduce yourself in the correct section; )
