Help. i cannot seperate the master cylinder from the slave. The plastic sleeve, pushed as far as it can towards the slave, but the two parts will not seperate. Is there anything else that I can try? Is there a knack

Isn't there a couple of plastic bits need squeezing either side as you pull it out? I think ideally you'd have pointy pliers where the tips are curved in to make it easy but you should be able to cobble something together.
Maybe it's fuel lines I'm thinking of so if I'm wrong then it just needs the sleeve pushed in further than you have so far but once you get it right they should come apart easily.

If its the type of push fit that pushes into the fitting, a spanner just bigger than the pipe will push it down. They can be quite stuck in though.

As per normal my son came round and split the parts on two minutes........ my excuse is that i am over 60!!
anyway all has now been fitted.
i have read many problems with bleeding the clutch afterwards
Can I say we simply used a syringe to fill the master right up, openned the bleed nipe on the slave son pressed the pedal, I then closed it and he lifted the pedal, did that about 7 times, after each 2 pumps, pumped more fluid in to the master cylinder, and we now have a perfect clutch pedal. No using vacum bleed kits etc. Maybe we were just lucky?
anyway the old girl is now back on the roads of normandy, 162,000 miles on the clock and a joy to drive, and take on fishing trips. It eats up muddy fields and tracks to get to the river bank.
Just have to repair my freelander 2 TD4 with a snapped cam belt. But thats another story

Nice one!
I replaced a clutch in my TD4 a few years ago but when I went to bleed it I got nothing. Turns out it's not uncommon for the master to fail when a new clutch is installed so I fitted a new one and all good again. The only issue I had after was the bite point was on the floor, I put this down to a cheap aftermarket master but as the Mrs was driving the car 99% of the time and she didn't notice anything wrong I forgot about it. :)
A year or two later I ripped the engine out and used the car as a test bed for an EV conversion but that's another story. ;)
