Hello all

I've just bought my 1st Freelander TD4,3 door commercial van,94k miles.

Needs a bit of a tidy inside and a few other bits of cosmetic tidying doing to it.

Did notice though whilst the engine is on, the car in neutral, if I turned the steering wheel left or right towards full lock there was a clattering/catching, as if something was rubbing against the rack as it rotated, the sound coming from under the bonnet.

However on driving the car & doing the same test there was no noise?

Anyone else experienced this??

If so what was the remedy, the last owner presumed it was a dry joint of some kind.

Pressure relief valve. Normal PAS feature. The more you keep the steering held on full lock part of the system is trying to keep turning but it can't so the valve kicks in, relieves the pressure and gives a pulsing, fluid noise and often a slight kick back through the steering wheel. Check the fluid level too just in case it's low.
 
As mentioned the noise DOESN'T appear on FULL lock in both directions..

It is audible only when the steering wheel is say, at the HALF way turn point between centre and full lock.

There is no clatter or noise when full lock has been reached.
 
HALF way (which is not in your original post) isn't 'towards full lock' which implies just about full lock which is what my suggestion was based on. Any answer or suggestion provided by members is based on the information provided. In view of the new info what I would now suggest is maybe a weak valve or pump giving the same effect a bit earlier as the system is thinking it is a bit more towards full lock than it really is.
 
Took it to LandRanger in Stockport, was told fluid could do with being changed as it looked past its best.

Also could be a sticking valve in the pump?

Fluid change 1st.

Any tips on doing this would be welcome.

Its only taken me 18 months to get to the root of the noise from around the base of the steering, inside the engine bay / rack area....found the cause and sorted it out!!

The answer is in the picture !! :D:D

Result: No clicking noises from the base of the steering rack / column on any attempt of the steering lock, partial or full in either direction. No air bubbles in the steering fluid reservoir.
