Hi All

Im new here, just brought a "V" 2000 Freelander Xi 1.8 Petrol. Never had a 4x4 before, just brought as the wife needs it to get in and out of the field where she keeps a horse.

Im a proper pertol head, and am well versed in pretty much everthing petrol both cars and bikes, however when it comes to 4x4 and diesel im struggling a bit.

Now i know about the freelander woes, etc etc and i brought one with FSH and the Head Gasket done 10k ago, so im hoping it isnt gonna be to bad. BUT.

Heres a few questions that id like to get to the bottom of.

1. When using 1st and Reverse, (obviously at slow speed) when coming off the power the car seems to stop very quickly and doesnt seem to roll very freely. I sought the advise of my father-in-law whos had a lot of Discovery experience, and he said it could be a sign of a knackered transfer box, but after pushing the car back and forth out of gear, he didnt seem to think it would be that? It almost feels like the brakes are binding or something.

2. Fuel economy from a 1.8 Petrol. we put £50 in it and it looks like it osnt gonna do much more than 230/250 miles? Is this normal. The engine sounds and seems to run very sweet, but after my question above i wonder if this is having an effect on economy.

3. No reverse Lights. Bulbs ok, are the switches prone to going wrong?

4. Strange noise sometimes, i think when braking, it sounds like an old spring going twang, a bit like the noise i get when i tried the hill descent gear. Again is this all normal. I assume its using the ABS and wonder if this all points to something wrong with the ABS. I know the front discs and pads are worn and am about to replace them. Dont know if this has anything to do with it.

5. Sunroof switch for elecy roof has been removed, so im guessing it doesnt work anymore. Are these prone to going wrong?

6. Radio not plugged in and not working, havent got a chance to try another, but wondered if its got anything to do with anything else elecy not working like the roof?

All in all im pretty pleased with the car for what i paid for it, so i accept there may be things to fix, but could certainly do with some advice on all of the above.

Many Thanks in advance.

Chris.

Oh dear, another one!
Sounds like yer VCU might be shagged. Do a search and try the tippex test.

No offense but the first bit makes the second bit seem hard to believe as only someone who likes dropping notes down a drain would touch a petrol with anything shorter than a barge pole, even if it came with a free LR mechanic in the boot... :p

Reverse switch under the gear stick cover most likely the culprit..

4. Strange noise sometimes, i think when braking, it sounds like an old spring going twang,

Possibly the return springs on the rear shoes fooked, could also be the cause of the "binding" when in neutral my own hippo had that problem, everytime i pressed the brake, "twang" from the back brakes...just a spring set sorted that.

5. Sunroof switch for elecy roof has been removed, so im guessing it doesnt work anymore. Are these prone to going wrong?

Chances are the rails are fooked, £80 a side to replace...

*starts the countdown to HGF*

Welcome and Good luck your gonna Need It!!! :D :D

No offense but i thought the point of places like this was to help each other rather critiscise peoples reasons for doing things or their knowledge. I brought the petrol version as it was cheaper to buy, and if i have to replace the VCU new itll still make a much cheaper car than the diesel version.

Never the less i guess people are entitled to their opinions.

Thanks for the advise all the same. :(

Does anyone know specific details of the bearing sizes for the VCU as ive just found a web page with details of a guy who replced his from parts at RS Components for £9, which if this is true could be a result.

Any Thoughts.

PS heres the link in case anyone else is interested.
Fixes to the Freelander

The bearings are for a noise and can be easily replaced as a full carrier for the VCU
The VCU itself cannot be repaired and if left can cause catastrophic effects on IRD and rear diff.

Thers a few tests if ya do a search to test the VCU

If in doubt replace it

Good Luck

Thats just the rubber bushes that support it, its common for them to go US, if there is a fault with the VCU (around £700) its not repairable, if its rolling free thats not so bad, but if its seized then your IRD (£900-£1200) and read diff (£675) will soon get borked too...

Paddocks << a good place for parts...give you an idea of cost for VCU etc too..

chriss, sounds as if you need to get all 4 wheels off and inspect the brakes,

also check the vcu asap like others have said, it sounds like its winding up the transmission, and there was a modification to the later models, im not sure at what year this was done , but they found on the earlier models the vcu was working too hard and the ratios had to be changed also the rear diff was beefed up as these were prone to failure,

dont panic, but certainly dont ignore the transmission if it fails its expensive, you have most probably bought the worst model / year for a freelander, but saying that they are not all going to fail over night

welcome to loony land

Just dipping into the mad mad world of freelanders, two points so far - 1 re the original post, freelanders don't have a transfer box (???do they???) and 2 what's a VCU - just did a search and turned up NOTHING. Sorry, I drive a disco nowadays but I'm just curious.

the search thing on here sulks if you use only 3 letters
so what do you do, try vvccuu? Seriously, I've just found it's the viscous coupling unit (sounds like my local park on a summer saturday) so thanks. I spose I'm lucky mine never went wrong (in fact my freelander never went wrong in three years and 40000miles wheee! - so boring I bought another nice unreliable disco)

PCLZ prohibits me from tellin you to try "viscous coupling unit" ya ****

If I knew vcu meant viscous coupling unit I wouldn't have PCLZ asked in the first place.
Last post said thanks I've now found out so don't bother to tell me.
If you don't know what vcu means a search on this forum won't tell you.
