Hello,;)
I have read a lot about k series freelanders, and then eventually decided to buy one, the head gasket gasket seems ok at the moment, but I have decided to replace it with the newer type. I have purchased the new multilayer gasket, and cooling conversion kit. My problem is that the new gasket does not go into detail on how to fit it, such as torque settings etc. Can anyone help me to obtain this info, it would be appreciated.

Can't help you with newer torque figures.

However, why replace and strip your engine when its running ok?? I would just keep an eye on the temperature and coolant levels and replace when (and if) needed.

Regards,

Steve.

If you open the head then you will have to fit new timing belt. Some peeps chance it if reasonably new but if anywhere over 10-15k then best to renew.

Some debate as to fit new oil rail, I didnt bother

Torque settings are still the same, keep the bolts in their original order
if re-using them. I marked the bolts relative to the position on the head before loosening, each bolt has a notch on the top.

You only tighten to 2ONm phase 1,

180 degree turn phase 2,

180 degree turn phase 3

Cam pulleys will have to come off, retighten bolts to 65Nm

rocker cover bolts are 10Nm as are most of the small 8mm bolts on the attachments.

But as G13 said why go to the bother, fit the cooling mod and just check your coolant and oil once a week as routine checks.

hi,
Thanks for the info, the engine does run ok, but coolant loss is taking place, it is not a great deal, but I think its best to change it. I plan on changing the timing as well, no idea when it was done, and it does not look that great. the cooling system looks contaminated, so I will flush it out with forte bio degreaser which is good stuff, used it on my rover metro previously. Another problem I have, is that I can not open the back pasenger door, any idea's would be appreciated, thanks again for your help:D

the door problem has been documented afore. . .go into search un you will find it. . . .:)

If the coolant is contaminated then gasket is gone.
Get yourself a haynes (heinz manwell)

I had trouble loosening the crank pulley nut. Haynes said to place in fifth gear then loosen, I had to use brut force and ignorance after much shouting and head banging. It was when I first came on here asking for advice LOL

You can buy flywheel locking tools from Sealey suppliers, just remove your starter motor and bolt it on. Plus you'll need cam locking tool and a tool to hold cam sprocket when loosening nut. You dont have to remove engine block but use a mirror to view cam timing marks

I fabricated all of these out of bits of angle bar etc. The flywheel tool is a but steep for what it is £35-40,

Thanks,
I have a copy of the refitting is the reversal of the removal procedure manual, but when is it ever that easy? I think I will have a go at fabricating the items needed, it should be ok, I have a mig and a lathe should i need it. Thanks for the advice, I think your right, the gasket must be shot, cheers waza.
