Hi all, very new to the site but thought I would post a problem to see what you all think. I have an early (y reg) Freelander that has been working fine up until last week. I was on my way back from my parents when the engine just died as is it had run out of petrol. I turned the engine over but it just would not fire. Having sat at the breakdown point for about 20 mins twiddling my fingers I gave it another go and after some accelerator pushing it fired up.
That was the end of that, or so I thought, then it happened again in the middle of the week. Same problem same solution.
Now today I have only been out on a short journey, about 5 miles, but it cut out at my destination point and was hardy to start, then on the way back it cut out several more times. Each time I have sat and waited then it would start again. I'm thinking this is a fuel problem but Im not mechanic and would like to hear what you all think it could be.

When was the last time it was serviced? Haven't filled up at a supermarket recently by any chance?
 
I don't think it's been serviced for a while tbh. We have had it just over a year and done about 8000 miles in it and not had it serviced yet. I fill up at the supermarket each week.
 
Chances are as you let it run out of fuel its pull all the rubbish out of the fuel tank into the fuel lines.
You could try adding a small amount of accetone to your diesel/petrol. About 50mil to 50 liters of fuel, this will help dissolve the rubbish and clean the lines.
Ok not everybody will agree with the accetone but so long as you don't go daft with the amount you use it's safe. I use it every now and again on the td4 to keep it clean.
Other than that, always keep at least a quater of a tank of fuel to avoid pulling gunk through your fuel lines.

I know ALOT of people around me who have problems with supermarket fuel, same symptoms. Everyone I see with the problem I say to use another petrol station which is just as cheap but not at the same place as there shopping. Problem sorted!
I'm not saying this will be the same at every station , and I'm not saying this is your problem but something to remember.

First thing I would do is give it a service
 
i use esso/bp/shell as there the same prices as local supermarkets never had a problem and found my cars run better than the supermarkets when i fill up and i dnt buy the premium fuel just normal one
 
Assuming you have a 1.8 or 2.5 petrol engine. An easy test is to put an old analog air pressure gauge on the schrader valve to see what kind of pressure the fuel pump is putting out.

Anyone know the location of the schrader valve on a k series ?
 
If its got a dizzy swap point rotar and condenser (buy several condensers i had an old spitfire same symptoms cutting out missing etc 2 new condensors the 3 fixed it) but i didnt knoe any of these had dizzys, also try a new dizzy cap..
Do a filters change..
 
they don't have condensors in these dizzy caps just a rotor arm.
