Hi All
New to posting - but need help!!
Wife's TD4 Freelander 2006 had started losing power occasionally but last week died on her and wouldn't restart. Got towed home & i want to see what i can do before paying a proffesional. Engine cranks but no firing. So far changed LP fuel pump & filter as this seemed to be the most commom cause - but not on this occasion!! Any help appreciated - also if anyone can reccommend a garage/mobile mechanic in Northampton area that would be cool!!!

checking the fuel rail sensor plug for corrosion is an easy job as well
( google "contralube-770" )

From other threads sounds like it may also be main fuel pump - how can I diagnose fuel is getting to engine?

If fuel was getting to the engine, it would be starting.
There are only a few things that would stop it from starting.

1: HP pressure regulator O rings.
2: Camshaft position sensor.
3: Failed MAF sensor.
4: Corrosion on the rail sensor or its harness.
 
Thanks Nodge68 - I suppose my question should have been - how do I diagnose that fuel isn't getting to the engine?
 
In a perfect world you would need to get the live data information off the ECU.
If the low pressure fuel pump is providing the correct 350Kpa or more, then fuel is getting to the high pressure fuel pump.
The HP pump then boost the pressure up to 25,000Kpa needed for the common rail injectors. The rail regulator O rings is a known cause of non starting.

If you have a smartphone or tablet then you can access diagnostic information by interfacing you device to the EDC using an ELM 327. You can use a Bluetooth version for Droid or Wi-Fi version with IOS. You just need a suitable app on the device to access all sorts of engine data. ;)

Those ELM devices are dirt cheap and easy/great to use on a phone. I got one, works fantastic...... on all my mates cars :)
 
Got delivery of scanner today & loaded APP on phone - ready to try in the morning - let you know how it goes - really appreciate the advice everyone.

Have you made yourself a dash on Torque and selected the rail pressure in the dropdown menu. It a bit of messing getting Torque set up. But once done, it's pretty good at giving you all the information you need.
 
Hi Nodge - thanks for persevering with my ineptitude!!!
Only got your response this morning & back at work down South now so will have to wait until Friday. In the meantime I think I'll do the regulator O rings anyway - do you know where to purchase & do I need any special tools?
 
Hi All - got to the HP pressure Regulator - -how do i fit the lower hard o-ring - the old one broke taking off & can't figure out how to get the new one over the lip without breaking it? Help!!! - so close!

Warm the regulator shaft and plastic ring up with a hair dryer. Then push the plastic ring over the lump on the shaft. ;)

Mine had a piece of plastic bag wrapped round my regulator shaft (in the picture)
