I'm am currently looking for a Freelander 2 and think I've found one that ticks every box. However there is an advisory on the MOT for Offside Front Play in steering rack inner joint(s). I was wondering what sort of cost I'd be looking at to rectify this and if it's something I should disregard the car over? It's 123k miles so it's not like it's low mileage.
 
Not an expensive job or cost for parts - cheaper if you DIY but you will need wheel tracking checked afterwards.

All comes down to the price, if they are asking top notch then go elsewhere.

What year, what price, what spec? All of those are important, if you're anxious about not overpaying.

For reference, my 2008 SE had an insurance valuation of £5600 when Iinsured it last July, and it would cost about £6300 if it was for sale at a reputable dealer, simply because apart from the two current mechanical issues (failed diff) (very common), slight misfire, (not so common), it's in perfect condition.

Just to let you know I went for the car. it's a 2009 SE with all the extras I wanted, lovely paint job, cared for and an almost full service history (missed 2015), on the test drive it drove perfectly with no clunks, bumps, or whirrs. Payed £5250 for it as it was 125k miles and had a few issues listed below but most seem to be common faults and not tricky to fix:
- Steering joint (advisory on MOT)
- Needs 4 new tires (but wanted to change to AT tires anyway)
- Passenger door is either locked or unlocked, have to manually change that from inside
- Rear electric window switch is broken in the front (works fine from the back) and passenger door window is very lethargic at closing.
 
Seems a good deal, but in my experience, service history is worthless as a guide to long term condition.

It should have had a new timing belt by now, if it's not documented, then do it ASAP.

Also I would change all the fluids in the drive train, so gearbox, PTU, Haldex and rear diff.
This would be on top of sorting out the other issues.

Have fun and enjoy the SE. I enjoy mine, when it's behaving itself.
