Hi, I have had a prob with the steering column locked showing up on dash, and car won't start unless battery disconnected. Took in and had new column lock fitted. Worked great for a couple of months. Took back and was reset and told to come back if it happened again. A few weeks later it did it again and back we went. Connected up to comp and found it was showing it needed software update. All done and 2 days later back again no start. But this time it was doing it nearly everytime I turn engine off and take key out. The steering column dosnt engage and won't start with steering column locked showing on dash. Disconnect battery foe 10 seconds and will start.
Has anyone else had this prob and how was it sorted. If myst be something with the software update as it has got worse since. Cheers

This is a common problem on F2.

Have a search (top right) for "steering column locked".

There will be threads with no answer but I'm sure I've seen a few threads go through with solutions. Think a new battery may help, but have a butchers at the threads.

Cheers will do had a new battery 6 months ago but thanks

There are 3 faults which effect the steering column lock actuator assembly.
1st: The steering column lock actuator electric motor fails, or 2nd: the connection between the motor and circuit board fails.
3rd, the lock disengaged switch can stop working, so even though the lock may be released, the switch doesn't detect this, and the engine won't start.
It's not difficult repair to lock actuator for someone reasonably technical, with the ability to strip the lock assembly, replace the motor, or re-solder the connection, or replace the switch. then put the lock assembly back together again.

What I'm saying is, it sounds like they've not replaced the lock, as if they did, it wouldn't fail so soon.
It's not a bad design, and other than the actual mechanical issues with the lock actuator, it's reliable.

I've not heard of a software update which fixes a faulty motor or bad electrical connection inside the lock actuator assembly, so that sounds like some BS to me.

There are a couple of things to do.
Can you hear the lock pawl retracting? Do you turn the steering wheel away from the lock, so the pawl isn't being hindered from retracting, same as you would if the lock was engaged on a key type ignition, you'd instinctively wiggle the steering wheel to free off the lock. Try doing the same when you insert the fob in the dock.

I'd be taking the vehicle back to whomever claims to have replaced the lock assembly, because if they had, the problem wouldn't show again for many years.

Hi. The steering column lock was changed by a reputable land rover repair company who gave me the old lock. I know what it is going to fail as when I take key out the steering lock dosnt engage. Then the car won't start next time key is inserted. Battery disconnected 10 seconds and all fine

If it's definitely had a replacement lock actuator, and it's no different, then the lock issue is somewhere else, which is unusual.

Next thing to check is all the electrical connections at the key dock, and the CJB (passenger compartment fuse box assembly), which are susceptible to being dislodged by a passengers feet.
It's best to disconnect the battery, and release and reconnect all the connectors by the footwell fuse box.
If you're lucky, the issue will be there.
If you can't hear the lock engage, then maybe there a wiring issue somewhere?
Next check is
