Hi,
I have a Freelander 2 SE TD4 which is coming up to 10K miles. After a propshaft replacement at around 2500 miles, our current problem is a persistent "hot oil" smell. The car has been into the local dealership with this twice now and has spent around 9 days in total with them. The first time they diagnosed a coolant leak (non-specific) and a leaking rear main oil seal. The second time they diagnosed a further oil leak ("from the engine" - all I know). Unfortunately it still stinks - I had to spend about an hour in the car on Saturday night and ended up with a chronic headache and feeling sick.
This isn't apparent so much at start-up (so not the fuel preheater or whatever it's called) but is especially bad when coming to rest after hard driving. I'm watching the engine oil level and that seems to be fairly static - if anything it is overfull.
Any technical suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have this car on contract hire through my ltd co. I'm keeping the lease firm up to speed on the dealer visits etc - but my next option surely has to be to raise the issues directly with them and demand either remediation, replacement or termination?
Cheers,
Gareth
