I did a trip to London 2 days ago and I lost 4gear in that it wouldn't engage and just slipped out. then 3rd gear started doing the same. we managed to get home but now when I engage the 3rd and 4th gear they sound really bad like really noisey and grinding. I can engage 3 if I hold it in place but the minute its not under load it slips again. Any idea what has happened exactly and what potential cost it will be to get it fixed ? much appreciate any advise on this. Obviously I'm thinking its going to be expensive and it will need new transmission but that's just me guessing.

You'd be very lucky if this works but I had a F1 with a crunchy 3rd gear and was advised to do an oil change but use ATF instead of the normal gearbox oil.
After a few miles the crunch was gone and never returned.

I'm impressed by that @Alibro
I feel like we should know more!

I bought an 02 TD4 without checking the gear change properly and only noticed the problem on the way home. If I changed gear gently it was OK but any brisk changes into 3rd and it crunched. One of the past members here suggested doing an oil change and using ATF instead of the usual oil and after a hundred miles or so the crunch was gone. Then I did another oil change using ATF again, I kept the car another 6 months or so and never had a problem again with it.
