Hi all,
Not been on here for a good while since I sold my defender.
I’m thinking of getting into an i6 so am after some advice on the below please.
Looking at Jap imported vehicles as £345 road tax.
Not bothered re fuel as I’m used to big engine cars :D
I’m guessing the Volvo engine is fairly reliable, but what about the electrics?
How capable are they in snow.
How capable are they in mud.
Do they need and are there suspension mods available, not for lifting more for comfort & handling really.
Any other info would be most welcome.

The electrics are as good as any Freelander 2 of that age.
They are reputed to be quite good in snow and mud given the Terrain Response system.
I am not aware of any available mods but there is a growing aftermarket for Freelander 2's.
However I would keep it as standard as possible given that the i6 is becoming increasingly rare.
One good point is that Japanese Market vehicles had extra quality checks so trim and paint should be tip top.
Are insurers still wary of imports or is that in the past ?

Doubtful, not seen many mods like this for other LR models either. Lift kit is just spacers above the struts, so doesn't impact travel or ride and easy to reverse/remove.

Off road they lack ground clearance, but are able to keep the wheels spinning thanks to the traction control, so generally should be good in snow/mud assuming suitable tyres.

Thanks 300,
Only reason I ask is that at present I have a BMW M3 that won’t go anywhere in the snow.
But me and the Mrs like the lake district in winter.
We took the Defender up a few years ago and had much fun.
An I6 gives the power and comfort we like so I think it should cope well with the lake district and a few shooting grounds that I visit now and again.
Just making sure before the M3 goes and and I6 is purchased.,

We may even plan a visit to Norway for a Northern lights trip if an I6 is reliable enough!

Either some good AT tyres, such as 3 peak rated ones or if snow/ice is more a concern, some dedicated winter tyres. The FL2 should be very good the snow.

Use all season tyres, and a FL2 will go pretty much anywhere.
The i6 is generally reliable, but very expensive to fix should it go wrong.
The TD4 is also a good engine, and uses ½ the fuel of the i6.

Hi Nodge68,
Duly noted, re TD4 I live in Khans car tax zone so need a petrol engine.
Plus it has to be a straight 6 engine or v8 for me..

Ah, I understand. I sold my i6 to someone from just outside the M25, who needed to travel inside the M25 every day for work.
The i6 does sound better than a 4 pot diesel. Just keep in mind that they do under 20 MPG in town, actually I saw mine as low as 14 MPG.

Not completely related to the topic, but here was a bit of a fun race we had earlier in the year. There is a silver i6 FL2 in the race.
