Hi all
Newbie to the site, but asked to post this problem here as members may be able to help.

Bought a Freelander to tow trailer to spain, had a few problems since arriving(see "introduce yourself section")

Now,there is a clunking noise when the accelator is depressed, same as you lift your foot off.
Seems to be coming from the drivers rear side at the back.
Took it into the garage, who after looking at it,replaced the Diff mounts, also checked the exhaust wasnt bumping against anything.
The problem is still there, after a lot of head scratching, the mechanic thinks it could be the Diff, needs replacing, but hes not 100% sure.
Dosnt want to have to replace it if its not that.
Has this happened to any of the members?
If so,any clues to what is causing this?
Cost me a packet since i got it,know its gonna cost me a lot more in the future..lol
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

I would have though the culprits would either be the three mounts around the rear differential (also known as the "final drive") or the two mounts on either side of the viscous coupling unit.

See attached diagram.

From your "introduction" post:
Then i had to replace the IRD Unit..over £1600 here..even though the logbook says it was replaced only 2 years ago.

If that is true, there must be a reason why the IRD is failing. The most common cause for a failed IRD is a seized VCU. You ought to check that ASAP. If you do a search for posts about the VCU you will find lots of advice on how to do this.

Two new mounts installed..with labour..over £210. The problem is still there.

The diff has three mounts.

Hi,

Ive got exactly the same problem it is really light and cant be heard with the stereo on.

Not that this helps you but im under warrenty so not worried what needs changing.

Clutch pedal cricks too but they can check that out at the same time.

Thanks for the info Blippie.
The mechanic only replaced 2 out of the 3 mounts, been on the phone to him to order the 3rd one for me.
Will have that put on to see if it cures it,if not..i will have to get a new vcu unit..if that dosnt work..its the Diff needs replacing as well.
God help me,have to sell one of the kidneys to pay for it..lol
Thanks again

Hmm, still not convinced that the VCU is the culprit - there is a good way of authoritively testing the VCU to rule it out (search this bit of the forum for "VCU").

Don't forget the VCU bushes, they are only £20 each, might be worth doing at the same time as the the third rear diff bush.

Good luck

Alternatively, jack one rear wheel up, release hand brake and put in gear. Turn jacked up rear wheel by hand. Again, it is tough but should be possible, without "stepping".

This doesn't risk damage to your UJs.

Thanks Blippie
Going back to mechanics as soon as he has the part in.
Will ask him to do what you suggested.
Would do it myself mate, but im not mechanically minded, wish i was,it would save me a fortune..lol
Thanks

Well????
Took the car into the mechanics to have the 3rd mount installed..the noise is still there..but not as bad as it was.
Told him about how to check for the vcu..and guess what?
It hasnt got a vcu on it..he couldnt find it anywhere.
We both had a look at the pc for description and pic of what it looks like and i couldnt see it either.
Are we both going nuts?
So back to square one..noise is still there.not as bad as it was.
Help...please..lol

The VCU unti is midway under the car. Its the barrel type thing in the middle of the propshaft. Picture here. I'm wonderin if your prop has been removed as its pretty hard to miss!

Still think that flippys idea of some way off switchin on un orft that front prop to vcu would be a fantastic mod , had a look at loads of bits but nothing that could fit in. . . .still lookin. . .:)

if woz to go proper 2wd (not Mondeo stuff) you cud remove just about all that stuff in the piccky above - from IRD all the way back to rear drive shaft knuckles!

How much do yu reckon that weighs?

or else a simple dog-clutch at front of front propshaft :D
