I seem to have lost the turbo function, as in not engaging. Just a puff of black smoke on acceleration, otherwise no smoke during normal running, but no boost. I'm going to get underneath it next few days but thought I would ask for possible causes. I'm guessing solenoid could have failed, but otherwise I don't have a clue what would cause total failure.
 
Would a perished vacuum pipe have the same effect?
i imagine a perished vac hose .. would cause the turbo-vane actuator to malfunction.
they can be replaced with silicone types for extra durability.

Hi there. I wondered whether or not you’d managed to identify the issue you were having last month?
Not on that car. However, it is a great deal better than it was and all i have done is drive it. I've been meaning to get to it but i got distracted by the purchase of another one, this time a van. Im going to update that thread in a minute, because this time i found (I hope and pray) the cause of no turbo. This one boosted like hell without the MAFF attached, but would not rev past 2000 with the MAF plugged in. I swapped the MAF but no difference, so then i pulled the pins in the wiring loom plug to the MAFF and found some discolouration. I had already tried contact cleaner but it made no difference. So then i spliced in another plug, plugged it all back in and now i have boost with the MAFF attached. Had the orange engine light on for a bit but then that went after disconnecting battery and then plugging it back in. Don't take this as a cure though because if it goes tits up you'll need a replacement loom. kind of at your own risk thing, and i only found it by accident.

I spend most of my time where LR parts aren’t easy to come by, but where I could do without a breakdown. Replacing the LP fuel pump was a lesson from which I’ve learned, so I’d rather resolve my issue whilst in the UK. I was hoping it’s simply an intercooler hose, but perhaps not.

Received wisdom on black smoke seems to be a split boost hose. If you are doing a bit while you are here, then it is always worth replacing the vacuum hoses to the turbo solenoid and the EGR, and around the reservoir. Easy enough to do because you just trace the old hoses.
 
When I put my FL1 g/box back in I couldn't have pushed the pipe on to the buffer chamber/brake servo properly (from the boost solenoid) & it consistently fell off on the way for it's mot which resulted in lots of black smoke on acceleration (& a wooden brake pedal given the pipe it was) so any leak/split hose in the vacuum/ intercooler system will give lots of Black smoke so it's worth replacing any or all if your in doubt.

Thanks. I reckon it has to be a split or maybe incomplete seal which is responsible. Going to get to it next week if weather holds.
