Hi all
New to the forum, but have a freelander 1 for a couple of years now, recently noticed when taking a right hand bend, a rumble noise from underneath, does not do it on left hand bend, checked tyres, tyre pressures ect. Drives perfect apart from that and passed mot two months ago, would be grateful for any advice, thanks

The two carrier bearings that hold the VCU in the middle of the car could be one possible reason. Try to lift up under the propshafts, is there play in the bearings?

Yes, start there. It is odd but I had one that only made a noise on a one direction turn.
Not just play, but drop the vcu from the car and spin the bearing, the noise will be obvious if faulty.

Noises are hard to describe in words. My Mum's Freelander started making a noise on tight low speed turns with lots of lock. Usually right hand. Almost sounded like a mud flap being caught in the wheel.

We changed the VCU with a reconditioned one as a drive in/out service from Bell. They tested the old VCU and it had indeed gone tight. So was the right decision. It completely solved the noise it was making.

OK thanks for the advice, as you said its is difficult to diagnose noises, but great advice from everyone, just want a fair idea of where to start, so thanks guys

OK just a quick update, checked the the play in the carrier bearings and there is indeed too much movement, so definitely think that is the cause. So will also get vcu replaced as well, 100k on clock and pretty sure vcu has never been changed. Any one recommended someone in Guildford or Crawley area, I know Bell engineering are probably the best bet, but don't want to risk driving it there. Again thanks for the advice.

Buy it from Bell and swap it out yourself, not difficult and you simply return the old one in the wooden box that Bell send theirs out in and get your deposit back !! Get them to fit 2 new bearings, thats the tricky bit !! If you buy a VCU and 2 x bearings they usually fit them anyway but best to ask.

Definitely 👍, will order parts from Bell as suggested, and get them fitted, Devon, not possible at the moment but thanks for the offer! Just awaiting reply from a guy who worked on my series 2 Discovery a few years back, so once all done I will let you know.Might be a couple of weeks, Cheers guys
