Hello guys, was just replacing my clutch on my FL1 diesel L series and when I took the gearbox off I noticed a lot of oil on the bottom and took the flywheel off to investigate and it looks like the crankshaft rear oil seal has been leaking.

Just been looking at the repair manual and it says to use 1mm bead of sealant LandRover GUG705963GM which is an anaerobic sealant.

I can’t find any LandRover sealant anymore for that part number, what other anaerobic sealant can I use for the job to seal the bottom of the rear crankshaft oil seal?

And do I need to replace the oil sump gasket to replace the rear crankshaft oil seal or can I get away with it not doing it as it’s not leaking at the moment.

I don't pretend to know about these sealants, but I was interested in what you are doing and googled that part number.

There is talk about that sort of thing on the web and it looks like alternate sealants can be used without problems, eg...


Looking back at your previous post. It looks like oil leaks have been a problem for you with your L Series. I also have pretty major leaks on mine. I'm losing about 1L in 6 months. 1/2 of it is ending up no my drive, the other 1/2 where ever it is when its not on my drive!

How did you resolve your previous one with the sump gasket? Was it just a case of the replacement gasket being faulty also?

I'm pretty sure I need to replace the oil pipes running in front of the engine, but I also thing I may have a leaking main seal as it look like oil is coming from where the bell housing mates to engine. Probably a few other leaks to! There's always a lot of oil around the filter area and the bracket where the undertray fits to.

I'm getting to the stage where I'm thinking of removing engine, box & IRD as a lump to address leaks, change the clutch, install the IRD I got about 7 years ago! and generally give the induction system a good clean out and check things over.
