Hi all, usually on the L322 and P38 forums but took the plunge with a Freelander project. Usual stuff... 2/4 brake solenoid etc.. etc.. Have done solenoids and gearbox work on other LR but obviously the Jatco box is slightly different. I don't have a manual for the car yet, can someone tell me if the gearbox pan has a gasket? It does look as though sealant is used when fitting back up? Does anyone have a spare solenoid... don't mind faulty. Cheers!

This may help as i think the R40 as the same box.

My 2005 TD4 SE didn't have a gasket, just sealer for the pan.

My 2001 V6 did have a cork gasket, when it came apart, but it went back together with sealer.

There is a gasket available (I think I have one somewhere), but sealer is easier.
Does anyone have a spare solenoid... don't mind faulty.
I've an old solenoid sitting on my bench, but can't remember what one it is.
 
Mine just had sealer on it when I cracked it open, Belt n braces I put a cork gasket and sealer back on it.....gasket bought from eBay.

Thanks for some knowledge. I have done flushes and solenoid changes on my other Land Rovers, the freelander seems straightforward enough... will go with sealer. Its the solenoid with a winged bracket, think there are two and it is the top one right lower corner. Going to have a go at repairing rather than replacing and would like a spare to practice on.
 
Lr fitted jatco's had sealer round the gasket cover. Other cars with the same auto used cork.

On a FL1... If the sealer is really neat then it will be original. If not then it's been opened up before and sealed again. Same for if it's got a gasket fitted. It's an easy way of knowing if it's been worked on before or not.

Thanks Hippo, I contacted my local shop, famous four, who confirmed no gasket listed. The previous owner was an armchair DIYer, a few corrective jobs to do on the project so I wouldn't expect that he has been in the gearbox, I know the tell on my L322 were the number of cross threaded bolts on the sump, pain in the wotsit drilling and re taping threads. I think he got the F4 and took it to his local garage who scanned it and found a possible duff solenoid and was then quoted for a new gearbox! The chap was about to emigrate and didn't want the bill whereas I am a time served Land Rover owner and impervious to pain! Going to start with resistance checks etc.. before getting into the gearbox, might get lucky and find a corroded wire?

The 2/4 duty solenoid fails regularly, so is more likely than the wiring, but you never know.

It's not a difficult job, once the cooler and pan are off.

Going to chuck some time at it tomorrow, I'm used to working under a gearbox, this will be the first time going in from the side. I see what they mean about the FL being a poor design to work on. I might service the box while I am there, full service in a week or two. Biggest pain is no seat height adjustment, must have built them for shorties? I keep bashing my head on the A post when I stoop to get in, don't think I will be using it much.
 
Loads of peeps have found problems with the wiring harness in the past. Normally caused when working in that area. Worth a check. May save you having to open it up.

Yep, does seem like working in reverse to go straight into gearbox without checking the easy stuff first. I have found with LR and pretty much any vehicle.. nothing is ever straight forward. The biggest issue with LR is that you're at the mercy of the peeps who tried fixing stuff before you! I mostly work on Motorbikes and that is my biggest headache, have seen some amazing bodges!
