Hi

I'm looking for a 1.8 petrol K series engine for a year 2000 Freelander and was wondering if any year engine would do and would it just drop in or do I also need it's personal ecu , codes etc ..... ?

Thanks in advance !

Ps: I already know it's a **** engine and will blow it's head etc ......

Why not just get the HG fixed properly? Much better to do that than fit another engine that might go the same way after a short period of time.
But if you must change the engine then any 1.8 will fit but you will need to swap out some bits and pieces about if you fit a post 2000 replacement, that weren't on the early engine. There are 2 basic engine type. The pre 2000 which has a distributor cap and rotor are and the post 2000 which used DIS ignition.
You can keep your current ECU though ;)

Thanks Nodge !
Because I bought the vehicle for scrap as some knob took the head off and then turned the engine over and one of the liners has come out and bust !!

I think it's too good to scrap I have found a 1998 engine for 90 snakes that is supposedly good will this go in then with the bit's off the knacked 2000 model.

Thanks in advance

Yes a 98 will fit without a problem if both are distributor engines. If the Freelander engine doesn't have a dizzy, some ingenuity will be needed to fit the coils and other parts the dizzy engine doesn't have.

Right so in a nut shell it's going to be a ball ache as the engine I'm interested in is a 1998 with a dizzy (just the block with no bit's.. coil etc) and mines a 2000 electronic ignition .

Don't want the hassle !

Buy a new liner and refit it, they have a hylomar type sealant that makes a water tight seal, stops coolant draining into sump, so you need a bit more info as to why head was removed, was it overheating, did it just mix coolant and water, was it cooked when coolant was lost etc, has head been skimmed befor or was this the first ever problem with engine??

Thanks Freelance !

Did'nt know you could just get 1 liner as I thought they were sold in 4s ?

The previouse owner blew the head gasket when it over heated or vice/versa ! The car has done 115k miles, from what he told me the head gasket had already gone once at 60k where they changed all the bolt's, bit's un bobs to try and prevent it happening again. This time he took the head off again and decided not to repair it. I bought it for scrap with the head and all the bit's in the boot. It's a 3 door jobby with the back that lifts off. It's in realy good nick so thought it might be worth getting going again !

Liners cost just a few quid each. They are available separately so no need to buy more than you need. They are indeed sealed into the block with thin bead Hylomar Blue. Before spending money on a new liner, you need to check the block land where the liner step sits. If the land is damaged, a replacement block will be needed. Also the piston and rod would need changing as a liner is pretty difficult to damage.
Do you have any pictures of the offending liner?

It was too late/dark to take you some pics when I got back this evening !! Had another look at the old girl though, the top of n° 1 piston is damaged down to the rings, probably why they did'nt repair after gasket going ! Get you some pics tomorrow ;-)

Pics as promised !
Con rod looks a bit rusty !!!!!!!!!

Can you drop the sump and get the piston out with the engine in situ ?
How much for a piston /sleeve ? Can you recomend where to get them from ?

What else will I need ? head gasket, joints ? New head bolts ? cam belt ?

How do I time it all up again as the knob that took the head off has'nt made and marks or anything .

Thanks in advance !

Looking at the damage, I think it's best to replace the block. The liner has obviously been smashed somehow that could well have damaged the block land and or the rod. While the liners and pistons are cheap, there's no way to check the block unless you know what to look at. For a first K series rebuild, it's not necessarily an easy job. Me, I'd probably give it a go for a bit of fun but I've rebuilt lots of Ks over the years.
Once you have the sump off, the oil rail needs removing to get at the rod bolts. Once you have the rod/ piston out, you need to look at the land where the liner seats. If it's to damaged and unable to support the liner upright, the block is basically scrap.
I'd do some more stripping before buying any new parts ;)

Ok ! Thanks once again for your replies ! Much appreciated !
I will get the piston out and check the head and make sure all the bit's are there before going any further !
