The 22yo 2.5l Tdi '90 failed the MOT in a major way today :(
Not enough room on the form for all the faults it seems...the last few were written in biro...
Mostly around worn bushes/pins etc. in front & rear suspension arms/shocks and some steering components.
Also failed on emissions (not surprising as the exhaust apparently has a "Major-Leak") and I have always thought exhaust faults really screwed with emmissions tests.

I expected a bigger than average bill to get it through the MOT but an estimate of 1500 -2500 seems a bit steep to me, and I can't afford it.
So I might have to SORN/SCRAP it. At least it did not fail on chassis-rot.
In my youth I would have had a go myself but age & poor health makes it a bit tough to contemplate.

Anyone know much it should cost to have all the bushes (suspension & steering) replaced, rather than this wild estimate from my garage?

The exhaust & the emissions is a gamble, fix the exhaust and remove the air-filter might do the trick....who knows?

Real shame, it's been fun to ride.

Nowt that cant be fixed then:)
 
Its the bushes that are time consuming. You could change springs nad shocks over in a day. steering wont take long, not much to it. If you do the bushes you could fit poly ones which just push in.

Do it bit at a time over the winter?

If you give a more comprehensive list (break it down) Im sure we could give you a time and cost of parts. then you know what a garage would charge OR how long it will take you ;)

Like Griff said, a complete list will help, steering bushes would take good weekends work tbh, cost shouldn't be that much tbh, a complete polybush kit costs under £100, even the steering components won't be a major amount ( £225 for reconcile steering box and that's the most expensive part )

Sort the list out, let us know

Being in Essex mate, we have a fair few members over there, I believe Oldskool rents out garage space & lifts at his garage anorl.
 
aye stick the full list up and we can have a look, btw a flo-flex polybush kit is about £65

Offside (steering box drop-arm) Ball-joint has excessive play.
2. N/S/F Suspension Arm has excessive plaqy in a pin/bush.
3. O/S/F Suspension Arm has excessive plaqy in a pin/bush.
4. N/S/R Shock Absorber has and excessively worn rubber bush.
5. O/S/R Shock Absorber has and excessively worn rubber bush.
6. O/S/R Suspension Arm has excessive plaqy in a pin/bush.
7. N/S/R Suspension Arm has excessive plaqy in a pin/bush.
8. Steering System has excessive "free-play" detected at the steering wheel (Steering box fitted).

All greek to me, I just drive it :-S

1. can be a bugger to do but the repair kit is pretty cheap

2,3,4,5,6,7 polybush kit solves these problems ;)

8 you may be able to take the slack out by ajustng it although it may be being caused by your drop arm balljoint

Number one can be repaired, but from what i researched, the repair kits have a tendency to fail again, resulting in doing it again, rinse n repeat etc, Recon kits come with 12 month warranty, imho it's worth swapping the whole box for a recon and be done with it.

Not sure about 8, could be like G says, the other stuff is sorted with a polybush kit.

Overall you're looking at ( let's say you go for a recon steering box ) about £300 ( although deciding on number 8, needs someone to look at it, add a little more )

Polybush's are easily fitted, but with a vehicle of your age it could a pain to get all the old ones out, time consuming abit but worth it. Try and go for the original polybush kit ( £98 ) or the Deflex kit which is cheaper (£60+) and can be got from paddocks i think ( Paddocks.com)

Your looking at a good weekends work and less than £500 including parts to pay someone on here to do it for ya :p:D
 
I'm free most of sunday so i can come have a look at it if you like, i may be able to help you out with the work too to save you a bit of money

Um no mate, the £100 ( exc VAT ) is added onto the price if ya don't bring your unit in for the exchange, believe me i know, i thought the same till i turned up with £100 short of getting the recon box.
