Hi folks, just got me a 300tdi Defender. Wondered what the sensible moves would be to improve performance, economy etc? From what I've picked up here I should be thinking about removing the EGR valve (parts on order) and de-gunking the manifold, de-catting it (that'll be the next job), but what else would people recommend? Any benefit in forking out for a K&N or Pipercross filter?

Is it post 92, if so you cant remove the cat only change it for a sports one, Dont know if you can get them for LRs.

Forget performance filters, its not a GTi,

Regular and thorough servicing will get you about as far as you can go IMHO.

:sarcasm:

Go-faster stripes! They worked for me in my mk1 XR2 15 years ago.

To go really fast you need one of those big exhausts that screw onto your current silencer.

neil - this do ya?

de-restrict your exhaust (straight pipe etc)

clean out your fuel sedimenter and fit a new filter

turn up the pump :)

every time you touch the brake pedal youre effectivly turning fuel into waste heat.... so look ahead and back off the throttle earlier so you dont use the brakes.
youve got the aerodynamics of a brick... keeping the speed down does improve economy.
harsh acceleration and high engine revs in low gears also wastes fuel ... 2000 revs is usually enough in the lower gears

performance and economy, not really two words that go together.perhaps a small japanese sports car would suit you better

Small.. Japanese.... Sports... Car??? I don't think so. Performance and economy are obviously relative terms; perhaps what I should've said was "how do I squeeze a few extra mpg out of it, and at the same time go from painfully slow to just plain slow?"
Seriously tho', thanks, all, for the advice, re - both mechanical and driving technique. All duly noted. The exhaust will be getting some attention next weekend. Today I have mostly been taking off the EGR; was horrified at the black carbon crud that had been deposited in the manifold...
