Not had chance to do the oil yet...

BUT

On way home tonight, 3rd was making a noise that I can only describe as a small lump of metal being pinged about..

Landy drove OK, seemed a wee bit slower but that may just be me, temp was OK though...

Now, What 'could' it be? ie, something to check with the box in the car, and something that aint gonna spring out in a 1000 pieces as soon as I look at it....

Time to stop driving it!
If even one small ball bearing gets loose in there, and if it gets between two gear-wheels, bye-bye gearbox in a split second.

Taks Grunt's advice - drain the oil into a clean container and see what it lloks like.

Well drained the oil tonight, not a lot in it..

But what was there was clean, nothing came out, rubbing oil between finger and thumb it does not feel gritty or anything...

So...

Do i refill and hope for the best (I do have a spare box but its an unknown one)

Or is there any panels I can take off and look see inside??

Is there a filter on it dunno what box you've got the fifth gear extension case has a filter in it if you have one wot that look like?

Guess its just the bog standard 4 speed landy Series Box..

Twas a big panel at the back of the box with a (Large) drain plug, took this off after draining the oil, all looked nice inside, no filings etc. Smaller drain plug nearer the front again nothing in oil, but cant get inside that bit from underneath, so a floor off job tomoz and see what i can see.

Gut feeling is she was low on oil, and fingers crossed no major damage has happened...

That big panel is on the transfer box. There int any easy way of looking in the gearbox even if you take the remote gearchange housing off you cant see much.

Sometimes a "nasty noise" can happen for a reason we will never find out - like a little bit of twig or even a bit of string ar a poly-bag getting whipped up by a propshaft or something like that.

Fingers crossed it was nothing drastic!

Well....

Filled her up with oil, went for a 10 mile drive, bit of town and some fast (well for a Landy) bits, and nothing, no bang, no noise (Strange ones anyway) and no leaks when I got back, guess it was just natures way of telling to fill the fecker up with oil..... ;o)
