Ok as a youngster the folk scene in the North west was pretty good
now 20 yrs after moving south it seems to have died
what passes as a Mike Harding song these days, Bob Williamson, Jake Thackery, Brownsville Band were all regulars on the circuit - and bloody good entertainment too, for couple of quid for a ticket to the local school folk groups concerts

I think when all's said and done it boils down to finances.
Those smaller venues which tended to support local acts found it unsustainable and have been forced to close and those venues which have survived the financial pressures have become too expensive for a night out with a couple of pints and a "turn" on the little stage in the corner of the big room.
The acts have also seen the costs of tickets forced up by the venues and have increased their fees to match.
Result? The "circuit" has largely ceased to exist, nationwide. Now, instead of entertainment, many pubs and clubs just offer an "A la Carte" menu.
 
You can still find pub sessions,my brother plays at his local quite often. Most folkies seem to play festivals these days though.
 
We go to a great folk club. Get some really good performers, from the beginner to the professional. Rumney Folk Club. Cardiff.
 
I think live folk music is in decline because the namby pamby vegan people who like it need to spend most of their spare time either preparing their aduki beans or siting on the toilet discharging said aduki beans.

Don't listen to hippy music me self but just got a couple of tickets for the Doris to see shania twain @£184 :eek:
She sunged our wedding song and I'm a bit soft like that;)

We had Sandy Denny playing at the ceremony, and Janis Joplin for our first song at the reception. Not much chance of a ticket to see either of those two nowadays!
