Hi folks,

Had a post in the Range Rover section about a loose crank sensor housing on my 4.6 GEMS.
Thought I'd follow it up on here as it's a bit more V8 specific.

Basically the crank sensor has snapped two of the inner tangs on my flywheel, was just wondering how badly this would be affecting the timing or if I'm 100% going to need to replace the flywheel.

The cps will just give a weaker,(About half I guess) with one side of the two tangs broken off.Should still run OK,its when both sides break off you would have a problem as no tang means TDC to the engine ecu(And it only should see that once a rev). The real worry is what has caused the tangs to get broken and trash the cps in the first place....

heya eightnavee,

Thanks for reply buddy.
It was only one of the tangs that had broken, fished it out of the bottom of the bellhousing!

The crank sensor housing had obviously just come loose, there's a fair bit of wear on all the teeth where they'd been running across the sensor pin.

Bit of a rough repair job involving liquid metal and bending the sensor pin to make sure it runs between the tangs...but not throwing any cam sensor errors and running ok for now though not really tested much.

Am sure I'll have to do some serious transmission/engine work at some point so hopefully the fix will hold until I get time to replace the flywheel and reseat/weld the housing back in properly.
