Hi,
Doing the oil and filter change I had the FL up on ramps and the tray off so thought I’d have a good look round.
Found this leak from the prop shaft out of the IRD to the VCU. Obviously any leak is less than ideal but should I be getting mentally ready to spend cash?
I was intending to upload some pix but apparently the site reckons I don’t have the required permission even though I did have the other day. I’ll upload as soon as….
In the meantime, the leak is straight out of the flange on the IRD to the first UJ of the drive shaft to the rear if that’s any clearer.

Sounds like the IRD output pinion oil seal has worn and is allowing oil past. Not changed one but the pinion and drive flange can be unbolted from the IRD after draining oil.
Job can be done on bench then. Seal is just a few quid.

Do you have to disconnect the ends of the drive shafts? At the IRD CV joint and the final drive? Or can it be just the IRD end? Haynes also mentions “pinion bearing preload” when replacing the oil seal and “best left to LR Dealer/ Specialist “.
Bearing in mind the last time I did any of this was my pre company car days 1987!!! Might be a little above my experience grade.:)
 
I’ve seen references to this RAVE manual but have yet to find one that I can open. Do you know where there’s a reliable source?

I've got RAVE for the Freelander on my phone, and a full Rover/LR version a W7 laptop.

If you have Windows PC...

You need to download the ISO file for the year of your Freelander, ie K/L Series or K/KV6/TD4.

You then need to 'mount' this ISO as a drive, for which you may need to download some software (I use virtual CloneDrive).

If you are running a newer version of Windows, you will need to copy the files on this 'drive' into a folder on your PC so that you can right click on the executables to set the compatibility mode to an earlier version of Windows.

From what you’ve said I assume it’s just a Windows thing. So no good for my iPhone 11 either…?
For now though I’m going to check what the leaks like in a couple of days to see how bad it is. Then make a decision. That ‘preload’ washer thing sounds above my experience/tool access level.

Rave is a set of PDF documents - but they are 'encrypted' to only work with the Adobe reader bundled in the ISO.

It is very much worth trying to get it running - if you have a Win10 laptop, it'll run on that.

It goes into great detail on virtually everything to do with the car - right down to pictures of every electrical connector so you can see where abouts on the car it is.
 
I have a version that works on Mac OSX. It needs Adobe Reader DC & runs fine.
