My missus rang me tonight and said the Disco (3.9 auto) had conked right in the middle of a busy junction and wouldn't re-start.
I threw the jump leads in me truck and got down there and it wouldn't start for me either. turning over but not firing.
Managed to tow it home. parked it up, my missus tried it and the 'kin thing started.

Do you think it stalled as she pulled out, then she flooded it?

I can't ask her, she hasn't calmed down yet.

It could be any number of things. It could have been flooded. It could also be the coil breaking down, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ignition switch etc etc.

If you can't find anything wrong with it all you can do is wait to see if it happens again. If it does you can begin to narrow the fault down by finding out if you have fuel and/or a spark.

I appreciate that answer, and it's the answer I didn't want to hear!
I'll give it a service and let her drive it around.
Someplaces around here ain't the best to be breaking down in

Get yourself a domestic voltage tester pen. The sort of thing that you use to follow electric cables at home. They only cost around £10 in the UK. If it does it again then you can get the missus to crank the engine while you hold it near the HT leads. It wont show up the quality of the spark but it will show if you have one in literally a couple of seconds and without having to get dirty.

I carry one around with me in my truck. They are dead handy for quick analysis on vehicles with seperate coil packs and especially on vehicles with intermitent faults.

I've got one of them pens, good thinking.
I'm in the UK next week, What would be the best HT leads to buy? or are they all much of a muchness. And plug type?

I'll leave that for the petrol heads to answer. I got shot of my V8 about 4 or 5 years ago. I used silicone leads on mine but couldn't tell you a brand.

Mine done that to me last night stalled and would not start at all. went to look at it today and it started first time, but it keeps on happening to me and I dont know why

Hi all.
Corroded or perished fuel lines in/from the tank leading to air in the fuel line. Dodgy fuel pump relay????

Cheers, Nick.

I had a similar problem but quite a while back I seem to recall that was a timing issue. Not sure if that's any use on a later engine with coil packs but it might be worth just checking both ignition and injection settings/sensors.

I've upped the idle speed to around 900rpm. it drops to around 650 in drive, I've booted it around a bit and I can't get it to stall/die on me.
I'm gonna tell her it was the flux capacitor, and I've changed it for a new one. So, if it don't break down again I'll live. If it breaks down she'll shoot me in my sleep. (then she'll come looking to kill Ratty, cos I told her it was his idea)
