Hello. I have a 2008 diesel Range Rover Vogue which I bought last Feb. I have had a problem since buying it of flickering rear lights and a couple of other weird electrical problems. More obvious now with the dark nights. When I start the engine and put on the lights, the rear lights start flickering and after 30 seconds the rear fog lights ( both sides) flicker and then stay on for about 5 minutes then they 'die' out and go out. The flickering rear lights remain. The front lights are fine. When the engine is not running, the rear lights are fine - only become a problem with the engine running. Replaced the battery s couple of weeks ago. Keep getting cars behind me flashing their light for the first 5 minutes of any journey because of my dodgy rear lights - bit annoying! Got an MOT coming up soon so wondering if this will be a fail. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. A recommended auto electrician for west Cumbria would also be appreciated.

Does the car have LED lights as standard or have aftermarket LED's been fitted?
If the former, look for poor electrical connections such as earths and corroded connectors.
If the latter, fit the correct bulbs.
 
Assuming its an l322 not a l320
2008 should be halogen units with led brake lights, red bottom clear top,
Led wasn't standard fit until 2010,
I have a 2006 with a 2010 facelift and 2011 led rear lights (2010 had grey trim inserts 2011 had black)

1, You can get resistors from powerful but i think the flicker still exist,
2, you can code out the hot and cold bulb checks,
3 you can use relays to power the lights no flickering no coding,

I managed to use an lcm and keep the cold and hot bulb checks by changing the pwm,

Another note to make that is overlooked on facelift conversions is that the led units only expect to see 13.5v not the 14+v you get from the alternator,
You'll see this stamped on the back of the lights if they're genuine units mine are genuine so can't comment on the copys,

The pwm has an effect on voltage and the brightness of the leds,

Had a look at the electrics leading leading to both rear lights units and I noticed a possible culprit for the flickering etc. I took some photos of what I think may be the problem: the first photo shows a taped up 'circuit board'' ( by the fuse now) leading into the back of tbe light unit ( driver's side).The second photo is a close up of the circuit board. Not an expert but this looks like a botched up after market job. When I put the rear lights on with the engine running, there was a fizzing and clicking noise coming from the circuit board and it was in time with the flickering of the rear tail lights and the fog lights flickering off and on. I could feel the fizzing and clicking when I held it. The third photo is an identical unit leading to the passenger rear light unit. There was no noises coming from this circuit board. After 5 minutes the fizzing and clicking of the circuit board stops - the fog light remains off just leaving flickering of the tail lights.

Sounds like a bodge to run an entirely pointless LED conversion. LED's are great when designed in, otherwise likely to be a problem. Nowt wrong with tungsten bulbs if that was what the car was designed for.
 
Get someone with a gap iid or buy one to code off the bulb checks, and get rid of the resistors, you can use normal automotive realys to replace them boxes,

Mine had similar in grey sealed boxes and was a much neater job but still not ideal,

Hence my coding solution, and threw the boxes in the bin,
 
Thank you all for your advice. I'll have a look beneath the tape and see what's cooking. Will get an auto electrician eventually to return the lighting back to good old tungsten bulbs.
 
But LEDs in the passenger saloon just does NOT look right! Not on a 1950s bus. I've heard someone does actually do an LED replacement with a 2" globe, but at about £25 a bulb that's a fair bit of dosh. The last batch of those bulbs made all went short life, the globes came loose in a relatively short space of time. Too uch thread drift here..
