so, an update, after buying a lift kit from SES88 around a month ago, my first attempt at fitting them failed, my own fault for not having gathered all the info, put up a post and ryan168 had just fitted his, and gave me the info I needed, so I was just waiting for a nice day, and having drove down the path to our woods yesterday and bottoming out in the vitara, thought today was the day to have another crack at it, so far one rear done, around 2hrs, so hopefully that will get shorter now I've done the first, took a fair bit of jiggling, but got there in the end, didn't need to bend a spanner, did the back nut from inside car through the suspension hole

so, after undoing the top nuts from inside car, then remove nuts/bolts from wheel

that gives you just enough room to get the spacer in and bolt up

then put all bolts back in, using a sissor jack under the rear drum helps move everything into position for the bolts, just need to do the exhaust bolts back up

hope to get the rest done this afternoon

Its so much easier just to remove the full strut assembley then you can fit the spacer. Did you locktite the extention bolts to the strut and torque them up?

jc600, yup it would have been easier, but I didn't want the hassle of bleeding the brakes and unplugging the sensor, as that would surely get things lighting up on the dash, yup I used locktite, yup, I tightened them up really tight:eek:

I thought the drivers side rear would be a doddle, after all, no exhaust pipe to get in the way, HOW WRONG WAS I:rolleyes:
there's the fuel pipes in the way, making it even harder

so after lots of huffing and puffing and quite a bit of cursing, I tried to bend a spanner without use of a bench vice or heat, I can tell you it aint easy, but I got there in the end, did most of the spanner work from inside the car, had more movement at the bottom thank god

anyway, all bolted up and everything back together, that's it I've had enough for today, need to relax a little, will attempt the fronts in the week, hopefully, fingers crossed they will be easier

stupidly I never took a before picture of the car wheels/body height, only after ones

I currently have AT tyres 195 80 R15, so any ideas on what can be fitted without having to alter arches etc? I presuming MT stands for mud tyres? or am I wrong, want something more knobbly

Yes mt is mud terrain. Although by all accounts freelanders do best with all terrain (AT).
On your wheels I wouldn't advise much if any wider as they are skinny wheels (same as mne). Buy a set of standard 16 inch alloys and chuck on a set of 225 70 16s I think you might need spacers though.

Could go 215/80/15 or 215/75/15 with your 15" alloys......shouldn't need spacers either. :)

Glad you finally got half way there :D

As for tyres, I've got 225/75/16's, Jamie has 235/70's. we both have modulars, but I had mine on my standard 16's too.

keep hearing this modular word but have no idea what your on about:eek:

so would 16" tyres/rims fit ok, or would steering be a problem, presuming to get the max height I need to increase rim size, is that the case?

Yeah, you can have the same size tyre's, for example 225/75 but the ones for a 16 are bigger than a 15.
With my lift and tyres, I had 74mm when they were new, bout 70mm now over standard

They'll fit fine, I had my big tyres on without the lift kit (but had spacers because they caught the spring cups)

Would 235/65 R17 fit? I want to use my 17" Evolution rims.

I'm currently using a '54 TD4 auto with General Grabber AT, which seem quite aggressive. The car is quite noisy, but most of that is the IRD I have been told (it's a courtesy car). I can hear the tyres, but they don't seem as noisy as I originally thought.

I think they'd be too big, maybe 235/60 if you can get them?

235/65's are much cheaper, Grabber AT's, Cooper AT3's would be what I'd choose from

You can't get BF Goodrich that small on 17's though, checked on the BF site.

Just had a look, 235/65 will fit, they're 6mm smaller diameter than my 225/70's, so about the same as 235/70/16's are

Those 235/60's are expensive, I barely paid £80 each for my AT3's!

17" tyres are more expensive. 225/55 R17 are about the same price as 235/60 or /65 R17's :D

215/80/15 are 28.5" so nearly the same as 205/80/16 and will give good clearance. My 235/70/16 are 28.9" I think. :)

The problem with his current 15"wheels is that they are only 5" wide so wider tyres may be pushing it a bit.
