I have been given a Britpart snorkel for my 90.
It seems easy enough, but the instruction sheet is not conclusive..

Looking in the passenger wing vent, there appears to be a drain hole at the bottom. Do you normally block this up ? Do you need to get the duct out ? Do you remove the heater box or go from inside the wheel arch?

Is it true there is a similar drain on the air filter ? Not spotted it yet.

Perhaps I am making to bigger job out of it.....

Well muttleyd, don't make the same mistake I did and end up with 2 (very expensive!) bent con rods cause you buggered it up and went wading before you tested it.

My 200 had a ribber 'nipple' on the bottom of the air filter that, on close expection once it was too late, seemed to be split in half and might have been the cause of my problem.

Does the Britpart kit come with the steel 'top hat' type fixings you have to compress behind the skin of the wing? If so I found these to be rubbish and I went and got some alloy ones I could compress without the special tool using just nuts, bolts and washers.

I also think after my rebuild I'm going to give it a bit of expanding foam in between the snorkel and the wing before I seal it.
 
Got me worried now, I've just put a paddock snork on my 200TDi... sealed round the wing, but didnt see any 'drain' holes just inside.. will also look on the air filter housing...

Yes there is a drain hole on the bottom, it's a rubber thing that ye should squeeze every now and then to make sure any water that gets into the vent on the wing drains off. It's the same kinda thing that's on yer air filter as well. If ye take the air filter housin' off and look at the bottom of it, yell see a wee spout type thing with a 'closed' slit, that's the same thing on yer air intake box behind the grille;)

I made my snorkel myself. I have used stainless flexi-pipe and brought it up through the vent on the top of the bonnet. It goes straight onto the airbox and runs right to the top of the window (one peice).

What I dont understand is why the ready made (original) snorkels rely on sealing around the hole in the bodywork. Why do they not run straight through?? If the bodywork isnt completly straight or the sealent brakes this can be very expensive problem when wading!!

Is it just me? Or does anyone else feel the design of the LR snorkel is a bit dodgy??
 
he'll tell you it's some posh stuff as used by NASA but it's actually SS chimney lining duct as used when you have a wood burner or stove installed

Where did yer get the stainless flexi-pipe?


There is a pipe/tube manufacturer in my town. Someone local sent me there to find something to make a snorkel out of. The stainless flexi they make is mainley supplied to the MOD for re-routing of exhausts and such. Its good stuff, and if you catch the gaffer on a good day he will sort you an offcut on the cheap. Think I paid £20 or so for 2 meters!

anyway, whatever its for, its made of stainless and it makes a bloody good snorkel!!

Ear hunter thas quite good! What have you got on the other end? Think I will end up making my own when I get a landie, how have you sorted breathers etc.?

Bet no one comments on your pipe!!

Ive got the propper mushroom on the top of it. Fits a treat!

My breathers were extended when I got it. I know the guy before me didnt do it so I guess its cus its Ex-MOD. They are extended to the top/back of the engine bay. I could take them further and bring em up the snorkel but I rekon I would have to be sat for a while in water past the windscreen (which I dont do if i can help it!) before they took in water.

One other point is that with the pipe entering on top of the wing its less likly to get caught on a tree and ripped off when off roading - which is what happened to my previous original LR snorkel!

Guess it sounds like, I need to bung the drains then.
Any advice on how to get at the duct ?

Has anyone fitted any of the wading kits advertised on ebay ? Are they any good ?

These are the bits you should need

CDPL06G01 6mm > 1/8" bspp (90 swivel elbow) £1.14ea x3
CDPU06 6mm (straight coupler) £1.07ea x1
CDPUT06 6mm (T) £1.65ea x2
PNFM6/4BK 6mm nylon tube (30m) £17.86

(the part no's are CDG pnumatics and prices from cotswold hydraulics)
