I have fitted Exmoor rear facing seats to my 90,however I have fixed them different from what is suggested, instead of securing via the hinge brackets to the wheel box tops and the internal edge,I have first made an alloy bracket in 3mm plate full lenght of the wheel box top and returned with a 90 degree bend down the internal face of the wheel box top and have now fitted the seat direct to this plate, then I have fitted this to the wheel box top via bolts.
The main difference this gives is that first the seats are located at the extreme width of the vehicle and allows better access. 2nd the seats now fold flat on the wheel box and do not interfere with loading capacity.

The main problem with the Exmoor fitting is that it relies on small rivets or small pins for their fixing point and that it restricks accessable entrance to the rear.

Hope this helps.

Old Land Rovers do not die they just grow old with dignity.:nospamhere:

The front seats from a transit (i think) fit perfectly and have built in seat belts, just need bolting through the floor - and...i have some you can have if you want!!! Best be quick though else they're going to the dump. They were perfect for the nippers but they do kind of take up most of the rear of the 90!

Thanks guys some really good ideas, the offer of the seats would be great but we're in Derby and unable to get down to you, but are already on the ebay trail!!

eBay trail... I'd go to your local vehicle re-cycling centre (Scrappy) there will be loads of 10 year old motors in there.

Is that meant to be Rear Facing or Forward Facing?

I have just got some Forward facing Exmoor seats and have looked at fitting them as rear facing seats, simply to get round the fact they take up all the space left to right and to get in and out you have to either fold them up or climb over them!

I got forward facing one so that I can fit 3 point seat belts and carry children in the back. I plan on using a set of defender seatbelts just with the top bracket attached to the back of the van body and not the front, and the buckle direct to the floor.

If I fitted them facing backwards against the bulkhead would they still be ok for children? Assuming 3 point seat belts were used?

Looking for info but not a lot on here! Or anywhere else!

Exmoor Trim do two types of forward facing seat - the ones without seatbelts are not approved for use with baby-seats or booster-seats. They do a forward facing seat with an integral three-point seatbelt - as far as I can ascertain, this is the only legal option for carrying children in the rear of a 90.

Nope just throw the fookers on side facing seats

They're 1 and 2 years old.

They int children they is babies.

But as me crystal ball has a flat battery I apologise for the misunderstanding & I'll clarify me point

If they're over 5years old, just throw the fookers in the side facing seats.:D

I am not too fussed about the law and the ratings as they are
only based on there standard fold down seats and their more
expensive lock type.

And dont take into account other things that they could have
simply modified on the cheaper seats to overcome the problems
at a much reduced price!

For instance the lock....

If you were to have a locking system on the floor to keep the
seats locked in the down position such as I have seen in the
photo below

Then surely that would take care of that problem (that they may raise
or move should the car be involved in an accident). I don't like the wing
nut idea as I would prefer the load area to be clear once seats are folded,
however there is no reason I cant make a counter sunk plate that takes
a bolt the other way and get a winged bolt!

That solves the locking problem and cost what £10.

Another idea is to fit some load retaining eyes in the floor and use a
ratchet strap.

Ok the seat belts I am going to use are the outer defender seat belts
as used on the passanger and drives seat. (4 point inercia retractable
jobbies) They are perfect for children and the only type that are legal.

They cost about £50 for both.

Assuming I mount them in the forward facing positon I will use the
brackets that come with the belts as can be seen in the photo at the
top left.

Alternativly I have seen that the TD4 Defender rear belt brackets fit see
the photo below they look like the do the whole job Belt reel and top
mount on the same frame.

They look a bit better so if I can find some them cheap I will use them
instead! (Apparently the main dealer do them for £60 a set!)

Then there is the final problem that exmoor seem to have totally over
engineered which is that fitting the seatbelts like they were designed
for the station waggon means that because the seats are narrower and
have big open spaces at the side there is a risk that the child seat may slide
out the side.

I intend to ensure that the child seat is attached to the seat using a
ratchet strap through the side of the booster seat and round the bottom
of the seat.

I know that altogether this will be as safe and if not safer than the lock
and twist type sold via exmoor.

And coming in at £250 see below, I think for a set of new rear seats it
is madness to consider the other option of lock and twist seats! Which
leaves me the cash to get a roll cage which will provide more protection
and I can have some side impact protection added to the cage!

£180 for the seats via ebay new! inc delivery
£50 for the belts and fittings
£10 for the tie down plate (If that!)
£10 for ratchet straps

I am sure that this set up would pass the same safty tests as the others
just they don't come out of the factory as standard.

And when I have adults in the van they still fit in and have room.

Hopefully they will look as good as this one....

The only problem I am having is finding information for the posability
of mounting them backwards so that the access can be gained via the
back door without having to climb over the seats. I would use the
same brackets and belts. And make a locking system for them whilst
in use.

The youngsters that travel in my car are not babies so dont need me to
be able to see them and are behaved enough for them to sit without me
keep looking in the mirror at them!

I am sure that they would be safe against the bulkhead just not sure on
the rules and laws with rear facing seats and every search brings babie
seats up!

(Sorry for the extra long post!)

Excellent pics Daddy.... I may shelve my idea of buying a second Land Rover (110) to go with my 90. But maybe thats too sensible. Food for thought as I wont touch bench seats. Do you have a particular roll cage type/make in mind?

I found them on another site, the last one very tidy job I would be happy if mine looks half as good!

I am torn as to which way to face them!

I haven't looked at cages yet, quite like them internal, but then think external may save some damage to the pannels!

I will probably just get a company to fabricate a one off. I may get them to put a tree slider that comes out of the side of the truck and down the side and back in, the same out of the roof and have a roof rack thats solid.

If I were to fit them backwards I could get a tube left to right and fit a 5 point harness in which would then make the folding seats a lot safer than the twist and lock ones without the need to strap the child seat to the seat!

What about fitting one behind driver rear facing for the baby seat and that way mum can keep an easy eye and even reach over? Have the other one forward facing on pass side as in last pic? I hate rear facing seats on trains as do most adults and older kids, less chance of car sickness too.

Very interested in your plans - please do update once you've done all the hard work and designed a cheaper alternative to the "lock and fold" seats :D

For me, I'd want the seats facing forwards - my little ones are younger and so I'd want to be able to see them in the mirror (and mum would want to be able to turn round and see them), plus as mentioned above, passengers generally prefer to face forwards (I know I would). So how about fitting a bulkhead removal bar, and gaining access from the front? Okay, it's a bit of a scramble - but that just adds to the adventure of riding in a Landy! :)

The kids in my car are only on booster seats, I am sure I will have 6 cars between now and the point I have a Baby seat.

Supose its a question of do I want to be cleaning mud or sick off the seats and out the back! lol

Think I am just going to fit them forward facing for now and see how they go. If they end up been a pain getting in and out I will spin them around.

Will be doing them before the weekend so will up load photos.
