Anyone had 2 done at same time? One front and one back - what do you estimate would be a reasonable cost to supply and fit at an independent not a Landrover Dealer? Just trying to get a bit of an idea before agreeing to an expensive fix. Thanks:)

If you are a dab hand with a drill, small screwdriver, hammer and narrow nose pliers you can do it yourself in a couple of hours. I'm now on the fourth one in two years. Have been going around the car each wheel in turn as one fails. Latest escapade was both nearside ones. You can get them off ebay for less than £50 each and even if you have to pay someone to fit them pay no more than £100 for labour. You will know that main dealers charge £120 plus vat per hour and they are about £140 each for the sensors - the same Wabco ones you can get for less than 50 as I say.

Would you be shocked to hear that today I was quoted £760 odd to supply and fit 2 sensors (£240 ish plus vat each) and this was the 'cheapest' he could get them! giving that total (to include an MOT) - this was all - no other extra wee things to pass the mot as apparently this was the only thing it failed on. And they had left the tailgate window fully open and it was wet heavy snow most of today - I assume the window to be open on account of the smell of fags in the car - back of car soaking wet:mad:
I took a minder with me cos he wisnae pleased that I wasn't leaving a 'deposit' of £250 for ordering the parts and I was a bit apprehensive to be honest.

Do you supply your own, or are they also charging for the vaseline when they shaft you?

You can get the sensors for £37 each (10% disc also when buying 2)

:( Yeah my work colleague who was kind enough to take me to pick it up offered to come in with me and his take was that 'had he not been there they would have tried to screw me' - I don't class myself as a helpless female and am not particularly risk averse but I was glad he was there if I am being honest! I paid for the failed mot and he was making a song and dance about 'all the time they had spent on it' - they had it 2 days and as far as I can determine they hooked it up to diagnostics (eventually) and at most could only have been 2 hours (I work this out by the times that I phoned and they had done nowt till the time he phoned me with the good news). I could have taken it to a main dealer for less than he was implying he should be charging I reckon! What he should have said is ' I have spent x amount of time on this and if you are taking it away it will cost x number of pounds but instead I just felt really threatened and uncomfortable like I said. You live and learn eh?:(

I did! I went to them because I read a couple of good recommendations on another forum when I was trying to find somewhere to get my driveshaft done last year - totally didnt expect them to rip me off! I just paid the 45 quid and left - he wanted £250 before he would order the bits then today he was whining on about he could order them but he didnt want me to wait like 2 weeks to get the work done cos he would be out of pocket for 2 weeks and it wasnt worth it for the £140 labour he was gonna get out of it blah blah etc. I really didnt see that one coming!

Sounds like a real stable business if he has to ask for front money to order the parts. Bit like that Cowboy Builders program on the TV !!!

If you give an indication of where you are, I'm sure that there are folks on here who will steer you in a better direction.

Have you looked thru the "Good LR Garage Fred" - sticky at the top f the forum.

Out of sheer curiousity - how much did your driveshaft cost at that garage?
and, were your "3 amigos" lights on

He sent me elsewhere for the driveshaft - I think it was £140 so assuming re-furb with hindsight! Altho they also failed to mention that! The lights were on before the shaft and had been intermittent for a few weeks or so before sticking on. It was after that when I got the driveshaft done.
I tell you this will teach me to go to the more dodgy parts of the East End of Glasgow!

Heck of a lot more work in fitting a driveshaft. That price could easily have just been the labour.

and would have been easy to change the sensors then - they can get damaged when removing the driveshaft

Depending on year - a driveshaft can be had for £70,
but the fitting is a lot more work than changing sensors

Driveshaft - less than an hour if a front one, a bit more for the back. In any case two sensors and a new shaft plus labour and an MOT - £350 all in.

Interestingly enough I mentioned this to Dick Turpin today who informed me that it wasn't front offside sensor (this was the drive shaft that was done) that was showing fault! Near side front and offside rear. Made me wonder slightly that did!

Hope it works out for you.

Seems strange he didn't want to do the shaft but was willing to do the sensors.

Never mind, at least you don't have to deal with him anymore

Very true - best to be philosophical about it I guess. Learn and move on! But I am gratified to have my instinct re-inforced (albeit I should have asked before jumping in with both feet) so thanks for all the good advice once again :)

Would anyone be able to recommend an ebay seller for these parts? Front passenger side and rear driver side abs sensor for Y reg 2001 TD4.
Thanks :)
This is in advance of knowing what I need - different garage had a look, front sensor is unplugged! so he needs to check if its working and will do that on Monday and he will check the rear one as well. I am no technical expert but I am thinking the guy on Monday should have noticed this? Especially as he said he 'checked everything else just in case it was the wiring'!!
Thanks

Maybe it was unplugged to show a fault that didn't exist so you could pay for a 'new' one (or at least replug the existing one!) fronts are the same left or right and the backs are the same left and right although front and rear are different. It's really just the length of the wire. Yours will be the two prong round plug type as there are a couple of different fitments. Dessy367 is the ebay seller I have used before. They are about £40 each.
