Hello!

Need a sump guard and possible a tank guard cos I drive on remote forest roads. Have been looking at the mantec guards since LR doesnt have any genuine sump/tank guards. How hard is it to fit them? Cant find any guide how to do it, and which dimension on bolts I need. Any advice?
 
I've just bought one of each from Dan at Duckworth parts:

The sump guard has just arrived and it couldn't be any easier to fit - remove the plastic "sump guard/chocolate tea pot" panel and fit the new unit by using 4 bolts that fit into existing holes. It's very thick, solid and seam welded. It will take about 1/2 an hour to fit without a lift or an inspection pit; about 15 minutes with one!
Make sure that you order the right one - there is an "early" and a "late" version, with different positions for the mounting bolt holes - just let Dan know which model year you have.

The tank guard arrives with me on Friday and I'm happy to report back on that one if you want me to.

Oh yes, they come with all necessary bolts and fittings, full instructions (though it's unbelievably easy to fit the sump guard!)

If you have to choose between one or the other, choose the tank guard; the tank is unbelievably vulnerable, the sump less so.
 
I couldn't believe how the tank hangs down like it does when I looked under one the other day

....and the tank doesn't come down much below the level of the exhaust.
 
The f2 has a steel sump guard anyways? How heavy duty you after?

You're right,it has. Upgrading the sump protection is nowhere near as important as fitting the tank protection, but I did once manage to land a very heavy hit on the additional sump protector on a LRE loan car. It's unlikely that it would ever have damaged the sump through the standard steel sump protector, but it would have saved a lot of co$$$metic damage.

TBH I didn't think the tank looked too vulnerable and as you say the sump is protected.

My main concern was the underside generally between the axles with the sills especially vulnerable.

When ever I have got stuck in the Defender more often than not I've either beached it on the chasssis rails or on the front sump and steering guard.......:rolleyes:

Must learn to read the terrain better in the Freelander........ then again if the doris is with me, her more cautious nature coupled to the fact it's her car :emps1: :D :D :D

I'm surprised that you feel the tank isn't vulnerable.

I've spend a little while under the car in an inspection pit and the plastic tank drops down beneath the otherwise virtually flat floorplan by around 4". While there are metal supports around it, large expanses of plastic could be very vulnerable to grounding out on something that could potentially rip the plastic tank open. The only other item that drew my attention was the catalyst....

Sorry you missunderstood. I didn't mean to suggest it wasn't vulnerable at all. I meant there were other areas for concern as well as.
I thought the sump guard looked to be lower than the tank .... :eek:

Maybe I need to go have another look :eek: :eek:

I see what you mean. I haven't compared one end of the car with the other, just how much lower the tank was than the surrounding floor pan. Please have another look and let me know what you think.

My supplier sent me the wrong bash plate by accident and I'm waiting for the correct one to arrive now. It should be hear in the next half an hour, so I'll either fit it tonight, or in the morning, The tank guard is due to arrive at the same time, but I'm dropping that off at the village garage as it'll need their inspection pit to have any chance of fitting it without injury! :rolleyes:

Inspection pit would be handy. But to be honest I'd rather use me ickle ramps. I like lying down on the job :D :D :D

I'm usually up in Keynsham (Bristol/Brizzol) every month if you wanted to take a trip to see the finished job...

:tea: Closest I'm gonns be is Stroud unless we do the Bristol and West show this year :)

Although I've got a feeling it conflicts with our annual distillery Pilgrimage :rolleyes: :D :D
 
Sump guard fitted and (although it was slightly more of a pain to fit than I thought it would be) it's much more useful than I'd hoped. It should really help protect the leading edge of the, much flimsier, standard sump guard. It should really help the car to "ride up" over any obstacles, rather than have it simply crash into them!

Just reviewing n old thread.

The Mantec bash plate fits forward of the steel sump guard. It protects the bottom edge of the radiators (which are completely unprotected by the standard guard) and allows the car to ride up over hard obstacles and directs them towards the standard steel sump guard.
