i am new here i have decided to buy a landrover to restore but my concern is the rot i will encounter on the box sections after stripping it down as i dont intend to spend a lot on the initial purchase i am in no hurry to complete this and intend to replace most parts of it as i go along i have not rushed into this and thought long and hard about it i am good with a toolbox stripping engines and so on and have messed with cars all my life i own a welder which i can use ok. is there any points on the box sections i should pay attention to when i go and look at any landrovers and any bad points to consider regarding the stripdown also what are the most expensive parts to replace except for the gearbox transfer box ect i have heard the chrome swivels are expensive if pitted is this true thanks for reading this post and any comments i recive to help me would be appreciated

I'm not sure if you have done this before but a chasis or bulkhead replacement are things you want to avoid unless you have plenty of tim/ money and reasonable engineering skills..
Replacing a Half chasis/ full chasis or bulkhead are the biggest jobs you could possibly encouter on a Landy and are not to be taken lightly. once youy have started the strip down you are bound to find mny more problems than you could think of.
In my eyes there atre 2 ways to look at it...
Do a complete rebuil yourself so you know its done or spend the extra cash and get one thats pretty solid in the first place IMHO

Sound Series 2a or 3s are not that hard to come by, and with the skills and equipment you say you have, you should not have any trouble finding one with a decent chasis and bulkhead. That way your money will go a bit further. Most parts are resonable and the nets full of information on where to buy them locally. The local auto trader is not a bad place to look, check the bargain cars first, before going right to the 4x4 section. also look in the 'Plant' section has these are good places to pick up doners.

Chassis and bulkhead are the two notoriouse tin worm fields.
If you are brave / dextrouse enough with the welder, as its all pretty simple forms, I'd not worry. There are plenty of LR's about with good mechanicals and shot chassis, and if you are looking to do a full tear down and have that ability - I'd have thought it would have been a good way to go.

Other wise, starting from a new galvanised chassis would be the way to do it with no welding and a certaintity that all metal would be good.

New chassis is about £1000, and is probably the way I'd go, but then I dont have much faith in my welding skills!

How much money/hassle/time can you afford?
