Including my wife's cars, we have owned 2 Classic Rangies, a Disco 2 TD5, Suzuki SJ413, Nissan Terrano II, Nissan Patrol SD33, Toyota FJ55 and Toyota HJ75. Currently my wife has a Feelander 2 and it is surprisingly capable and comfortable.

Because the roads here is South Africa are so bad, I am considering getting myself a Freelander 2.
I like the idea of converting it to 2WD. Sounds like I can just unbolt the drive shaft to the rear. However, before I castrate my car, I want to know that A. I will not overstress something remaining in the IRD or gearbox and B. It will not cause ABS, TC or other warning lights. Most of the posts I can find seem to talk about Mk1. None that I know 100% are FL2. Thanks

The easy option is to remove the fuse powering the haldex. It's won't be able to activate the haldex so won't change from 2 wheel drive to 4x4 when needed. Won't effect abs or other features. You just loose the option of 4x4.

In normal use the Freelander 2 is front wheel drive only. When initially pulling away it activates the haldex to give 4x4, momentarily to stop wheels spinning. After that it only activates the haldex to provide 4x4 when you tell it to do so via the terrain response settings or if it detects wheel spin. It will then activate the haldex until it senses it's not needed. So you you don't really need to make any changes to the Freelander 2. It's 2 wheel drive untill 4x4 is needed, and automatically goes back to 2 wheel drive, when the terrain response setting it set to normal road driving.
