Hi all,

First Landie, first post!!

I recently bought a 1969 Series 2 SWB 2.25 PETROL. All looks in good condition, but recently (2 weeks after the purchase) I noticed that everytime I start it - whether hot or cold - a great WHITE puff of smoke comes out of the exhaust.

Any ideas what this could be? Once the engine is running I see no smoke at all - not when I accellerate, not when I just idle - NEVER!!

Other than this, the engine sounds 100%.

Condersation or blown head gasket.

If you do short runs it might be condersation.

But if not then check for the following but you may not get all simptoms.
Water loss, bubbling water, washing of spark plugs, mayo in oil = head gasket.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. Over the weekend I started the landie inside my garage and when I walked passed the exhaust, I felt something against my leg. When I looked down I noticed that it was drops of water coming from the exhaust, "spraying" against my leg.

This morning I again noticed drops of water on my garage floor after starting and pulling out.

Any ideas??

You'll always get water out of the exhaust as it is formed by the combustion of the petrol and oxygen. Petrol and oxygen goes in - carbon dioxide and water (plus other partial conmbustion products) come out.

You get a lot more water droplets when the exhaust is cold as the vapour condenses on the inside of the pipe, when hot it doesn't condense and leaves the tailpipe still as vapour.

ffs its normal, yer burning a hydrocarbon fuel which mean yer mixing it with oyxgen. oxygen and hydrogen make water. this water is the cause of eggzaust rusting from the inside if you only do short journeys then the eggzaust will not get hot enough to stop the water condensing inside yer eggzaust which is what you see spitting out the back.

if it still does it after a long run then yer might have a head gasket blown

FFS, ok-ok :D

Seriously, ok, I get it.... Stupid question, but I was just thinking if I give you guys ALL the symptoms (including condensation), then you might be able to pinpoint exactly the reason for my very first question - why the smoke when I start her up!?

Yes, I hardly drive 2km's to work everyday, so I dont get enough long runs in - even though I try to ride around the block a couple of times before heading to the office - just to get the engine warmed up a bit.

Thanks for the help............ FFS :D

2k's....ffs i can **** further than that!!
but then again, it is far ya know....damn, its really very very very far to walk...

Yeah, I was waiting for that.... Yes, 2 k's to work!! Come on, why a bike when I can drive a LANDIE!!!!!! Anything else than a Landie for 2k's, yes then I agree, "buy a bike ffs".

well fer one yer landy dint like it and yer gonna fook the injun sooner rather than later, and two yule get some exerfolkingsize instead of walking round yer landy wondering why A/ yer eggzaust has dropped orf and B/ why yer need a noo injun

2k's. yer could empty the cooling sytem, throw the fan and water pump away there-by increasing yer fuel mileage.
to compensate fer it not getting hot enough to run properly

Ok, seeing that this has gone from a landie forum to an excersise forum, lets talk about it....

Please suggest how, after I have DRIVEN the 2k's (ffs), I then get to clients, maybe 50k's away - 3, 4 times a day!? Would you suggest I walk to the office in the morning, then around 10, walk to my house and get the car, then after seeing the client park the car at home and walk the 2ks to the office, then around 1pm, walk to my house, get the landie, see the client, drive back to my house, park the landie and walk to the office etc etc etc etc........

Or, I could get into the landie in the morning and "drive around the block" before driving the 2k's (ffs) to the office in order to actually use the coolant, fan, waterpump and whatever else.

Any further comments regarding my day-to-day routine would be greatly appreciated. :)

Drive it 2Ks ter werk & when it breaks, fix it! Give it a good run every so often & bluddy enjoy it. Fekin bicycles, fekin devils werk so they are. :D
