Well after years of looking and thinking, I finally took the plunge and bought myself a Land Rover. An L reg disco commercial and will hopefully be picking it up on Tuesday. I've bought it to restore and to use as a towing vehicle for my welding business. It's relitavley straight although I'm expecting to find issues as I start digging next week so would like a few pointers of what exactly I need to look for and what replacement parts will be best suited to use.

I'll be stripping the interior out and repairing/replacing all corrosion that I find, although the guy I've bought it off has already replaced the sills with box section and the boot floor with chequer plate (I might replace that with an oe panel). He has also patched up the inner wings. Depending how bad things are when I strip it out, I may remove the body and build a bogie for it to sit on for ease of moving it around the workshop and while I work on it. I have plans for a roll over jig for when I restored a 1969 merc and reckon if I use bigger than stated material I could make one for the shell! Has anyone made one before and does it work?

I also intend to restore the axles and replacing bushes and anything else but not being a mechanic (I am actually rubbish at it but want to do it myself) I will be needing as much advice as poss for what to do, what to look for and what oils, parts and best methods to use. The engine has done 200,000 miles but if it goes well I'll keep it and work on it, if not I'll replace it with either another 200 or maybe a 300 tdi unit.

It'll be a labour of love as I've wanted a Land Rover since I was a kid but I reckon once finished it will look awesome and work well for picking up and dropping off machines and buckets for me. Watch this space, loads of pics to follow

Thanks

I'm not mechanically minded myself, so won't try to give you advice as there's plenty of guys on the forum who really know their stuff.
But welcome to the forum.

When you've got it gissa shout and I'll give it a once over with you so you know what you're looking for.

Well, today's the day I pick up my first Land Rover, looking forward to it although a bit apprehensive as I haven't seen it. I bought it off eBay mainly due to the sellers feedback and amount of items sold and the fact he sounded genuine about the work he has done on it so far. I'm in no rush to get it on the road as I have an urge to strip it down to check it over for any repairs or replace worn parts. I am after fitting a two inch lift with all the correct parts like corrector arms and extended brake lines. I also want some chunky tyres and will also trim the bumpers, more so for looks but I do hope to get into green laning.

I'll post pictures up later this evening
Cheers

Good choice of vehicle, the vehicle that saved Land Rover back in the late 1980s.
And soooo much better than all those Brokeback Mountian 4x4s that tow plant around these days ...I use my 3 door L reg constanly for 1001 different things and it just keeps going!

I don't have any pics yet as I was in a rush getting back but I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of it. For 200,000 miles the engine is spot on and is sat at 80mph quite comfortably on the motoway. It came with a new clutch just fitted, a new battery and rear seats should I want to fit them. I will defo be removing the body as I realise it could be a great truck once restored to an extent. I will post pics up tomorrow.
