:confused:hello all you clever landy folk,i need help please.i got a td4 filter kit from e.bay,i also have a haynes manual for my 2005 freelander sport.can anyone please tell me where i can find the crankcase breather filter,it dont show it in the manual,very frustated....regards ivan
 
take the top cover off the engine, it is just in front of the injectors in the middle, from the top looks like a black syphon from a toilet.

be REALLY REALLY gentle with the plastic connectors to the fuel lines on the injectors, these are really fragile and there have been a few threads on here about people having snapped them and having no end of trouble finding replacements.

AS OP says, right at the back of the injectors. There is a plastic sheild which separates the housing from the injector rail.

With the top cover off, you should be able to identify it pretty easy. Think it's held in with 4 screws.

hi guys,thank you very much for the info,i just replaced the air filter and in the process,i saw the crankcase filter unit,i take it the correct one is on the left,there aint much room to work....would that filter cause the td4 to smoke when i start it from cold?...regards ivan
 
usually if it is smoking from start up and not at any other time then it is the valve guide rubbers but if it is smoking all the time the you have a problem but change the filters then check

It IS in the manual, just not in the servicing section!
They were not originally though to need attention but this has since been proved otherwise so annual replacement or replacement with the BMW unit is the norm.
Assuming you have the correct Haynes manual (4623) it is shown in 4C.3.
 
And yes if its swollen up it does cause smoking, but with a swollen crankcase breather it normally gets worse as you run it.


Also whilst your in your scrubs make sure you replace your turbo solenoid filter :) Tis an oft neglected thingy.
