Hi Folks,

does anyone have one of the new 'stop start' TD4's? Am thinking about moving to one of these from my present runabout but would like to know whether the claimed efficiencies are real and what peoples real experience of the mpg is like?
Thanks,
Fred.

yes there is a difference in mpg but it's really only any good in town driving, the main thing is it's in a cheap road tax bracket compared to earlier fl2's and this is the reason land rover did it. stop/start is standard on all 2010 models onwards

You need to bear in mind though, there is alot of stuff that will cause the system to NOT work and this is not a fault with the vehicle. Things include.... cabin air temp not reached target temperature, not wearing seatbelt, you haven't made a gearchange, terrain response turned on, towing a trailer/caravan, battery voltage low to name a few!

There is a good thing built in though, restart after stalling. Bloody good this is. If you stall it, dip the clutch and it restarts, marvelous!

Mines got a key operated ignition switch which is simple & cheap to operate.

Yours may have but see how long your battery and starter lasts when you stop and start as many times as a td4e can.

Wont be cheap after you've ****ed it.

Awe Clutchy, yiv found me out. To be truthful, I don't do that with it anyway. My battery is a Bosch silver which might stand up to some punishment but yer right of course, it wouldn't hack it & the starter is a known weak point & wouldn't last two minutes. Was hoping for a bit of debate but yiv chopped me down at the first post.:D

Sounds like a development of the system Fiat had in the 1980's - sure they fitted it to a Strada or Regatta - son't think it really took off though!

What's the difference with the TD4e then, how come it doesn't shag it's starter and battery?

True 'tis a different TD4
BUT it still has to; correctly pressurise the LP fuel system for starting (while warm), sense the cam position ? (while warm), prime the HP injector rail (warm injectors), engage the starter (again), drain the battery to turn the engine, boost charge the battery after starting
Hang on a minute aren't these the majority of the TD4 starting problem areas on the forum over the last few months?
If this new 'E' engine really works - what's been changed and how can they be fitted/adapted for mine before it develops these problems? :scratching_chin:
If it don't then I think there will be a lot of Freebie2 owners joining us as warranties start to run out with simmilar problems but from 'E' mode. :5bwilly_nilly:
Hope they have sorted it as some real improvements would be usefull. :)

at my work they brought in eco mode where they shut down one/two engines depending on gps locations (for hills ect) and level of engine demand (varying passenger levels) the central computer shuts the engines down and they restart when needs warrant it (in theory).

In reality engines shutdown when you dont want them to, then dont restart either due to electronic inhibition or shagged starter motors becase they have been turning over great big 19L lump all day. We actually have had a campiagn where we replaced every starter in the fleet to improve reliability.

I am not too sure on start/stop myself....
