Quick question -- in the next couple of weeks me and a couple of mates will be putting a tdi into an old TD 110. We haven't got an engine crane at the moment, we contemplated using a tree and a pulley, but do you think that between us (2 of us 6ft2, well built, 1 of us 6ft 7 and massive) could lift out the block of the engine without any crane or anything? It'd just make it a lot easier if we could remove it first before taking it to my mate's garage to put the tdi in. :D:D Tell me if we're being stupid

I very much doubt it...its one thing to be able to dead lift a weight...but to lift it the height of your chest and move it...what does an engine weigh...200kg??

You are gonna bending into the engine bay...you will kill your back...in fact i'd say its physically impossible!!!

the problem is not the weight of the engine, although it is bastard heavy, it's how it's situated in the vehicle. it's not a straight lift like it was on the ground, which would be hard but feasible with 3 of you and some straps and a bar. it's inside the vehicle and you have to manuver manoover er manhoouve ah f*ck it try and wiggle it out. ideally you would need one of you free to give it some jiggle and see where it's catching as you try to lift.

either hire a hoist, or buy a 2nd hand one of ebay and sell it when you've finished.

good luck

I can just (And i mean just!) Move a 2.25 Desiel without the head on. Would not like to move it far though! I reckon you could do it, but try to make it as light as possible.... Drain the oil, Alturdnator off ect ect. Going to be a pain in the arse though!

As G-man said Rad and Wings out or you won't have a hope. I would Possibly get a couple of scaffolding poles and strops?

it gives a LOT more room to work and is less stuff to get smashed WHEN you drop it!

can you get someone to film it when you do it? i could use a laugh

them tdi's iz filthy oil burnin smelly heavy chunks o metal...yer'll end up lookin like that weightlifter vid :(

when i picked up th 19j from pete23 it took his engine crane and him n me to lift it into the back of my van!

Well, we're going to give it a go anyway. We'll try without any hoists first of all, and if we fail we'll go down HSS and get a hoist. :D

An other note, I am looking for a decent complete 200 tdi (either disco or defender) OR a rusted out MOT fail Discovery - PM me if ya have anything I might be interested in.

And please don`t forget that video equipment!

Saw a similar picture at the Darwin award not to long ago!

With the bodies available it sure sounds feasable, But yeah like some have said remove ya rads ancillarys etc! Where in kent r ya?? i had a hoist for a week for thirty odd quid from herne bay plant, the advantage being with a wheeled hoist is the minor adjustments that can be made to get in out and left right! not just up n down which is all u will have from a branch! if ya go with the tree option do please film it, gotta be worth a giggle!

so if i read this right, you're going to half kill yourselves removing this engine and you haven't found a replacement yet.
good luck
