I'm off to Wales in six weeks or so for some camping. I don't travel light, and I've got two daughters and a big dog; so I'm keen to optimise my load carrying capacity. I'm thinking about a roof rack.

This isn't a huge expedition (drive there on the motorway, drive to Waitrose for supplies during the week, drive home on the motorway) and it happens once a year.

I've got a 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis TD5 pimpmobile which has the fat pipe roof bars instead of the square, slim ones.

Is there a way to make the fat pipe roof bars carry a load? Or are they purely cosmetic, and I need to put a gutter-mounted rack on top or on the back?

Pic ? No idea what Fat Pipe Roof bars are... But if they are just bars what would you be strapping stuff to ?

You should be getting most in the vehicle if possible. I don't think we have Waitrose in Wales.... .

Here's an example. The roof rails are round in cross-section and probably intended to match the chrome pipes it has by way of side steps.

I highly recommend the Waitrose in Monmouth.
