hey folks :)

after battleing through some dense greenlanes near exeter last weekend i happened to almost rip my snorkel off the wing of my 1984 LR90. it seems i only bent the upper mount and dislodged its place on the wing (it doesnt seem to be welded, more like glued).

i popped my hand underneath to discover it stops about 2" below the wing :( now ive seen the safari snorkels running into the vents on TD5's and other snorkels with lower attachments, but mine stops just under the wing. im running a 2.5 n/a if that helps. should i have some additional pipework connecting my snorkel to something, somewhere? luckily i havent been through any deep water in the 4months ive owned it! i would however like it to work properly and not just look good.

help as always appreciated :D

the snorkel should be attatched to the air filter, the idea is to raise the air intake to a height where it isnt going to sock water in when wading. if it sops under the wing it obviously isnt connected to the air intake and is there as a pose. a bit sad really, it shouldnt take much to connect it up to the air intake but remenber to seal the joints to stop water ingress ;)
 
yer, i knew it needed to be high and stuff, and when i looked under the wing, i thought, that aint right... will connect it up in the future, have to take some measurements 1st. also the air filter is on the front far side of my snorkel so i will have to route it around the engine bay. which route should i take.

1. across the front under the fan and down the wing front to back?
2. down the wing around the heater unit, behind the engine and across to the snorkel?

just worried about hot spots melting the pipe i will use. any recommendations on pipes or coneecetors? i was thinking flexi washing machine type stuff with some rubber sleeves and jubilee clips :)

Can't ypu move the snorkle to the air filter side? If you have a long run of intake hose the air flow could be restricted and water could collect in the low points
 
good point grunt... i could move it, but that would require me drilling a new hole in the wing, welding it in place, riviting the upper mount in place. i dont really have the resources myself. id also have to fill in the hole allready in the wing and tidy that up :(

hmmmm, its cost&time vs. doing the job properly vs. amount of use (as allways). i havent done any wading to date. and if i do, it wont be a huge amount. think i will take the easier&cheaper way out and run a length of hose. when i do go wading i could always disconnect the hose and check for collecting water and blokages etc.

one other question. where my air filter is, do i have to make sure that the only entry point is to the snorkel? or will the snorkel just be an additinal fixture. also the housing element of the filter doesnt seem water tight. should this be made water tight when i get round to connecting the snorkel hose?

I spoke to a guy who worked extra on mounting accessories on LRs prior to delivery. He said that it had been quite fashionable to have the snorkel fitted but not connected, that way you could have all the styling value of having the snorkel without the drawback of the extra intake air resistance messing with engine performance...

so your saying the performance of my 2.5 n/a will be even worse than it is? oww dear :( not sure if i will bother now.

ormus - its just a drainpipe with a mushroom head that stops short under my wing. the previous owner must have liked the look of things on the outside and not given a T^*s about performance because he didnt even wire in the lights on my roof bar! (yet another job you will all hear about).

ive decided to route the pipe around the engine bay. should only need some flexi pipe, some sheet rubber, and jubilee clips :D will do this after i overhaul my handbrake this weekend... any tips? :D

Well, the snorkel isn't fake as such, it's only missing the the unseen bits that actually makes it work. Much like the early/mid-80s craze of sticking scoops on hoods(or should it be bonnets?)

without bothering to cut the hole underneath needed for it to actually make any sense. And, of course, without the engine underneath having anything near a high-rise carb...

It pretty much depends on what revs you are running. You are adding a significant length of plumbing, with a couple of short radius turns that your intake air has to go through, this WILL affect air flow to some degree. You probably won't notice on low revs when air flow isn't that big anyhow, but it could very well show up on higher revs.
 
im not worried about the top speed effect... im worried aobut it taking even longggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggger to get there!!

:) i think i will still go ahead and cobble something together though. does anyone know where i can get thick flexihose get by the metre?

BQ or Wickes sell those kits for tumble driers/extractor fans. that flexi hose may do the job. check it out.
 
add put money on the PO fitting the thing then realised he'd ****ed up by putting it on the wrong side
 
i dont think the PO actually knew how the thing connected up or he didnt want to connect it up and thought it looked better on the drivers side...

i hope i dont get too many probs routing the whole lot around the engine bay... im going to have like 3-4m of hose from snorkel to filter!
