My poor old 2.25 diesel has just failed its mot.. I had a little play and gave it a bit of a run today.. noticed a few odd things recently like revving and settling back to idle all on its own and just randomly dying.. whilst I was out on the run the oil pressure light came on and when back off.. when I got back I popped the bonnet and it had blown oil every where mainly from the rocker cover.. I'm guessing the rings are passing and its pressurising the sump and the revving when hot is it running off of its own fumes or oil.. any other input??

Don't run it again if you can help it at all - it could run away with itself. As you say, sounds like rings. A compression test will tell for certain.

May not be any help but I have a good 2.25 diesel removed from my series after it was replaced with a tdi.
If you're interested in a replacement engine let me know

If your motor has sat for few months before giving it a run prior to mot and you suspect the rings are ceased pour a tablespoon of kerosene on the top of the pistons and leave overnight. Sometimes frees them up.

Take that butterfly off the inlet and throw it power sapping crap . Get a transit alt with piggyback vac pump needs an oil feed and return I did my 2.25 and it was much better .I picked oil feed from the head at the rear and welded a pipe in the sump for a return .
