After having a 2nd hand auto box put in last august, i'm today having similar symptoms. Last time, my flex plate broke which i believe buggered the gearbox. This time, i think the flex plate is ok but today had 'banging' into gear from pulling away. It won't engage unless its revved. I thought it may be low oil as looking underneath there seems to be oil all over the lower engine and gearbox so maybe oil cooler leak. (engine oil level is fine) However, i undid the filler plug to check the oil level and gained a sea of gearbox oil all over my drive!. Now, having just sliced my thumb open whilst opening my new hex drive sockets, i wasn't in the best frame of mind and forgot to put it in neutral but still, i shouldn't have lost around a litre of oil from the filler plug should i? I'm a bit vague on the workings of the gearbox but could there be a blockage stopping the oil circulating and holding it all in the sump? Any suggestions appreciated....

yes as pump isnt running circulating the oil through the tc and system
Well i'm slightly relieved that it was my error that caused the oil loss, though i now have to buy some more oil ( i had a 3rd of a litre left in a bottle for a top up which is less than is now on my drive! ) and hope that is the problem (low oil).
Could the oil that is coating the lower half of the engine and gearbox be from an oil cooler leak? Its not red but its obviously mixed with old engine oil and road grime by now.

could be but could be many other sources

Anyway, from what i have described (and the fact that the gearbox had new oil and filter less than a year ago, the oil itself is still good and i may have a leak ) does low oil seem the likely culprit?

could easy be ,it would be the first thing i checked, and the fact your oil is still clean
Just bought 5L of oil.... engine running, in neutral, filler plug out, still pouring out of hole!! ( quickly back in to avoid losing too much again) any ideas?

Dunno, but it is the proper procedure. Move through all the gears for a couple of seconds in each and then back to neutral.

I've just done it, though its not taking up drive in each gear or any gear for that matter, but it only engaged yesterday when revved.
