Hi guys and gals,

Am after a bit of advice, please. I have recently sold my V8 Range Rover Classic Vogue SE due to the shocking fuel economy and my desire to cover more miles and see more places in my 4x4!

So, I am looking for a replacement 'base' vehicle, and can't decide between another Range Rover Classic, or a Discovery 1. They are basically the same vehicle underneath if course, but is there any reason why I should chose one over the other?

I've always loved the RRC's so am leaning towards that, but finding a decent 300Tdi, with an auto box, is proving difficult - there's not many about! Discovery 1's, on the other hand, are pretty plentiful, seem popular and perhaps have more storage space, but then they don't have quite the same draw, for me at least!

I will be tackling the odd green lane and pay & play day here in the UK, but am planning a couple of expeditions over the coming 12-24 months - namely across the Pyrennes on one trip and down to and around Morocco on another. So, in due course various modifications will of course be added - but I need a vehicle first! Thoughts, please? :D

I have no experience with either of these, but as above the disco seems to make more sense in terms of price and availability of spares. If you are only going to be stretching outside of the EU to Morocco I wouldn't be thinking so much about an exped vehicle but one which suits your needs in the UK more. A 200 or 300tdi manual would be the best bet as your Auto would eat fuel and be difficult to repair/replace even somewhere like Morocco.

As an aside, there is a nice cage for a disco being sold over on Devon4x4 :D be a good edition to a greenlane/exped truck

re-post??

Nope?

Disco, easier to get, cheap, good mpg

Hmm...same engine in both and the Disco is a tad heavier, why would the MPG be any better than in the RR?

Thanks for the advice! I think 80-90% of the mechanicals are the same on a 300Tdi Disco and 300Tdi Range Rover - the RR has a viscous diff rather than a lockable one I think, but most of the other major components are the same, so hopefully spares wouldn't be an issue?

Also, Morocco would only be my first trip - I am planning on going further afield (hopefully) but plan to do it bit by bit - Iceland is another area I'd love to visit and explore at some point!

Still loving the Range Rover idea, unless someone suggests a really good reason as to why a Disco is better!! :)

In a Range Rover, you drop the tailgate and have a perfect sleeping space. Can't do that in a Disco.

Around here, the RR classics usually belong to people who do go offroad and in the bush, the Discos belong to people who live in town.

Good point Kano - although there's quite a security issue there!! Not to mention temperature issues as well!!

If you prefer the RR, then hold out for one...there would be nothing more annoying than getting a Disco which you do not seem entirely keen on...and then a few weeks later an ideal RR turns up!

Wise words rusty - and exactly what I'm doing too!! :)
