how can i make my exhaust on a diesel series 3 go up through the rear body, is it simply cut a bit off and weld on some that will go through the body? Also is it possible to put a bigger back box on that would give a deeper note and also could i do both of these at the same time?

You are better off doing these mods with new pipe as welding old rust exhaust is not easy....doable but not easy :)

I wouldn't bother with the bigger back box. S3 diesel doesn't make anything like enough HP to worry about that. If it was turboed then I'd suggest that a large bore system from the turbo back would (and does :) ) make a difference.

It would be quite easy to have the exhaust pipe coming out of the front nearside wing if you want to go for the tractor look - especially if you have the 4 bolt exhaust manifold which exits horizontally.

A lot of cars have 2 types of silencer in the exhaust system: One to reduce the high frequency noise and one for the lower frequencies. The one for the lower frequencies usually have baffles in them (these can restrict the flow of exhaust gas), but the ones for knocking off the high frequency noise have a perforated pipe going straight through them and don't restrict the flow much. If you go to a scrap yard and find one of the straight through types and just use that in your exhaust system you will get a deeper note and theoretically more power. I did a similar thing on my petrol 2A but with a side exit pipe infront of the nearside rear wheel. It didn't acually make it any quicker and all the extra noise just ended up ****ing me off after a while so I put it back to standard a few years later.

fitting a louder exhaust will probably make it sound like a tractor! i know a boy who had a custom sports exhaust fitted on his diesel pug 206, it sounded like a tractor at idle and then like a bus as it pulled away!! ah how we laughed :D

i run my diesel landy without a silencer as the exhaust system (bodged landrover system made to fit the perkins engine) fell apart, its currently just a pipe* coming down from the manifold and out behind the front n/s wheel, keeps the fumes out of the cab but its pure tractor fart noise that comes out it!!

* i say pipe but its actually a tetly bitter can and an old bit of car exhaust held on with jubilee clips......

i ripped the exhaust off my s3 doozel last time i went out laning it was fooking loud just ask spurs he was following me lol i had to wear ear defenders just too drive it!!!

forthe record it sounded like a cross between a drag car and a scammell :D

I have a 'collar' bolted to the bed with a pipe slid on underneath and the stack slid on top. The collar is a piece of pipe 4" long with a thick piece of steel with four bolt holes in it welded in the middle, like the two pices of steel that bolt together to join exhaist pipes, you could use one with three holes as they are more abundant on old bits of exhaust pipes.
Just take a flexi piece off your box and hook it up and through the bed and no it dont get hot, warm but not hot.
I know mine a slitty but same idea:eek:

haha great responses lol it sounds like a tractor as it is atm i just wanna get it out the way of teh underside cos i think i keep catchin it when goin over big rutted tracks, i like the idea of it cumin out the nearside by the wheel, but a bit worried about fumes, so i think ill get some new pipe and make it so it comes out through the back. thanks for all the help!

if i get rid of the back box and have the exhaust goin straight from the manifold and out the back , will i loose any power, is it legal and will it pass an MOT like this?

That cherry bomb is all that is in my system and with the k+n type filter it goes like stink and is quiet.. But it has a turbo which takes a lot of the sound out of it so you will need to keep a box underneath.

I'm sure you can do a better job without butchering the body but mines scrap anyway so hey :D

hmm can i stick a turbo on a series 3 diesel? thats another question i was gonna ask... adn i need to get this project very legal, thats why i wondered if it wil pass an mot with the exhaust the way i want it to be!

A turbo will work better with no back pressure (straight through exhaust) but a N/A engine needs some back pressure to operate efficiently, so you would need some sort of silencer, regardless of MOT requirements. Years ago, turning the manifold round and chopping a hole in the front wing was the "thing", but I think it became mot fail, unless you put some heat wrap on the pipe and silencer (maybe something to do with cremating the granny you had just hit?).

made mine from stainless steel..I used the original first pipe so only the back part is stainless

yep that last part is flemish but you'll figure it out ;)

so..... i can put a turbo on a series 3 diesel, but will need a silencer somewhere down the line? i could make the silencer sit in the smae sort of position but have it dort of mid body rather than at the end then just uyse flexible exahaust pipe to have it coming out the wing? you know where i can buy a turbo from? and would this all work!?

also what diameter flexible exhaust pipe willl i need? my landies not wiht me at the moment so cant measute it but wanna get some ordered for when i get back home!

Sod the turbo, too complicated and expensive, get some flexi and reposition the single box up behind the cab, paint it all matt silver or silk black and bobs your uncle. Join the exclusive pipe up in the air club, you could call it a moonduster exhaust if anyone asks:D ...most people like mine even though it was only put there cause I was bored one day and wondered what it would look like..
:D
